It's about $ not people now folks - theres a fat american who has some insecurity issues with BB's - he is in charge of the equipment , search him out and complain to him - shaved head fat sack of shit and trains at night always in a black polo shirt and shorts - they have ruined what was the best gym in Wellington and alot of great people/trainers have left as a result of this.

Your 'shit talking' hasn't come across that way to me, nor has any of the other comments in regards to city fitness thordon. It's all informative stuff.

Besides everyone is allowed their own opinions. If you think city fitness thorndon has gone downhill or is becoming some kind of pansy fest, your allowed to say that it sucks. Thats what forums are all about.

The 'inside' information about the various changes are welcomed if you ask me, gives me a good heads up about finding an alternate gym.

I mean what do these guys expect, if you take a perfectly good gym that caters to both gym goers and fitness people, then change focus to fitness only, of course you will get the gym goers leaving in droves. If they think people will just put up it, they are crazy lol.

Are they annoyed about things said in this thread, PD?

If they're reading, they've got a chance here to respond and dispel any myths or untruths that are being bandied about

I think I've said before in this thread, I've got no real problem with the direction they're heading in from a business standpoint, as I'm sure the moves they are making are going to result in more profit for them. So good on them in that sense.

There are just some toes (namely people on this site and like-minded folk elsewhere :pfft:) that are being stepped on along the way which they don't seem too troubled about.

Anyway I'll sign out of this thread with a *glad to have left*, mourn the loss of the old Bodyworks we knew and loved, and leave it at that :salute:

I guess I put my comments out there for other Wgtn folks to be mindful of....

While I may be frustrated at the direction they're taking the business, and at the lack of communication to the existing client base about that direction, ultimately it's their decision, as are the consequences if folks decide to vote with their feet.

I would have to question the assessment that Wellington is ready for another "Health Club" when Les Mills Extreme and Hutt seem to have a lock on that market, and would have thought that a bid of research might have had different conclusions. Having said that, I went to LM Extreme over Xmas and there were a LOT of ex-CF members, and PTs, there.

It may be simple naivety that lets someone think a stack of plates and dumbbell handles, or more machines, is an adequate replacement for the dumbbells they already own - but if the research they've got says that's what Wellington needs....

As for me, maybe I will fetch up on the darkside up Taranaki Street :shifty:

I dont blame you guys for wanting to leave City Fitness Thordon and going to another in gym Wellington. From what I make of your post sounds like city fitness is turning into one big huge joke or going down the loo big time.

No mate , this guy has a problem with BB's - he was overheard saying "I bet I pissed the BB's off by the way I've split the leg equipment up" - penis envy much  - what he doesnt realise is its not just BB's he is pissing off with his silly little games but the PT'S and all the other people that use the weights there.

The trainers used to look like they knew what they were talking about now you have overweight or fresh faced school leavers who look as though they dont know shit from sugar training people...The place maybe now spacious upstairs but it has lost its energy that it once had over all the other gyms in Wellington...It's dead and no longer has what it once did.

CF you just lost another member plus I will be voicing my disgust to anyone else that asks what the best gym is to join - I have a bunch of people who will be leaving when I do also as they are not happy either. :x

I blame myself for the direction the gym is heading in. I am cursed. Signed up to Club Physical and they moved from James Smiths Corner to a crappy office in plimmer steps. Now I sign up to city fitness and a few months later they are doing this crap. I wonder if I sign up to the powerhouse..... is Old Bull going to take the gym in the same direction as all the others

I hope all the sports teams affiliated with shitty fitness jump ship, as clearly they dont want any serious athletes using their facilities. Hell even the beasts from the pulse could lift more than 20kg dumbells.

Was a little bewildered when the equipment was rearranged into a very annoying way. Leg equipment is split at different ends of the gym. Free weights equipment is split around the gym with weight racks scattered everywhere. To get plates you have to search for them.

Wondered if it was done to make everything look "neat", but starting to think it is a planned move to get rid of BB'er

if anyone at cityfitness is reading, move your speed bags away from the mat area, no one wants to hear that wild thumping while stretching, and i hate not being able to use em because I would have to walk over girls doing their thing...gaaah, a reply to my email would have been nice. thanks and sorry guys. vent over

I see what you mean! I was stretching and beside me two guys were hammering shit out of the speed bags. It was a continual hammering in my head which was so annoying I had to leave and stretch downstairs. And of course they had to walk over people stretching on the mats. Surely someone must know how to lay out a gym properly.

  • 3 weeks later...
I'm loving CF Thorndon these days. Nice and empty whenever I go, no probs getting on equipment, even once on a weekend morning. It's a dream come true

Try goin at 6am..... not a lot of people benching at that time of the morning!

I used to do early starts but it just doesn't work for me - I like a break from an otherwise sedentary day in the office. Unless something changes with my work hours, I'm sticking with early lunch breaks, which right now is just perfect with the mass exodus.

I've never been to CF Thorndon so cannot comment on the goings on up there, however you guys need to chill just a little regarding the so called "fat American".

This is my 19th year as a fulltime PT, half that time working in the US and Aus, and during that time I've seen PTing in all forms, good and bad. From experience, I can say without a doubt the PT industry in this country(relatively still in it's infancy) has gotten itself into such a sorry state with (generalization here)under-educated, overhyped, self-loving trainers with no genuine care and/or respect for their clients. This is proven time and again by the number of clients who drop off or don't actually understand what they're doing with a personal trainer. This is in no way disrespecting those amazing PT's who do exist out there in good numbers.

The American you guys refer to is Doug Hatton, Director of PT for Cityfitness. If anyone is going to correct the direction of personal training in NZ it's this guy. If you gave him a chance, his knowledge about anything to do with exercise principles/physiology/movement patterns/nutriton - you name it - will totally blow your mind (assuming you know what he's on about). You have to give credit where credit is due instead of jumping to conclusions.

CF has introduced a new system regarding PT, the main goal being to teach members to understand what Personal Training AS A PRODUCT actually is. There wouldn't be many gym members who could tell you what personal training actually is. Already this system is producing serious results, the most pleasing aspect being a more educated member base. Happy client = clients retained = happy PT = happy Cityfitness.

So next time you see the "fat American" around, have chat with the guy. The only thing phat about Doug is his knowledge of the industry.

Can people on this board who are currently members at Thorndon CF confirm that this system in place is producing serious results as quoted and give their thoughts on the matter?

What have I noticed ? A crop of PTs who had good businesses at CF Thorndon all left - and by their own words many seem to be doing better elsewhere.

There IS a new crop of PTs at CF Thorndon, but not one of them has spoken to me, attempted to get my business (and I know I still look like I could use the help :) )

I've seen some of the new crop in action and their skill level appears uneven - some good, some clearly demonstrating poor knowledge of form and technique - so a "work in progress".

For all that, tho, CF Thorndon is re-focussing itself away from its traditional client base... Specter will remember there used to be some spare spin bikes upstairs for cardio ? Gone - taken away when the cardio equipment moved downstairs, and will not be replaced (too "maintenance intensive", I was told directly) - nor can you use the spin bikes in the spin room unless you're doing a class. So, that's a useful facility removed.

It's always a franchise-owner's prerogative to re-position the brand in the market - but it would appear that the changes being made will cause a significant loss in the existing client base.
