Too much protein?

Hey Greek. I dont think 300 grams of protein is the problem even though maybe for your weight and depending on your goals could very well be justified or it could not be.

Heres why. The likes of Ronnie Coleman, Branch Warren to name a few are on diets in the exccess of 300+ grams of protein a day. I watched a clip the other day of Jay and was doing about 4000-8000 cals a day. So break that down in protein/carbs/fats ratios. These guys also weigh in at a hefty 315-350lbs (143-160kgs)

So i guess the point im trying to make is as a rule of thumb is at least a min of 1gram of protein per kilo of bodyweight a day. Remember this is thee bare min that is usually fround upon in bodybuilding. So if i was you aim for 1.5-2.5. If you go 2.5 that would be 225g of protein for your current weight which is still very high. Just remeber though when you start putting on the lean mass and putting on weight you also have to up the intake of protein with your new weight. Dont forget the carbs and fats as well.

Anyway i hope this makes sense to ya and sure some people would probably disagree. But this type of dieting worked for me as a professional and all of my former colleagues.

Good luck

Does excess protein get stored as fat?

Excess calories get stored as fat, it doesn't matter where they come from.

Personally I think 300 is a bit high but it probably doesn't matter. It depends how you're dieting really, and how many carbs and fats you're taking in along with it. If you're going low carb, excess protein will actually be turned into glucose through gluconeogenesis. You're better off consuming more calories from fats than protein on a low carb diet.

Depends on energy expendature and whether or not your 'enhanced',generally around 1-1.5 max per pound body weight for a natty, your body can only assimilate so much at each feeding otherwise it will be stored as fat.It also depends what your goals are generally i go higher pro when cutting to stop muscle wastage, yet lower carbs and fats (obviously).I reckon 200-250grams max would be all you'll need.

Thanks guys, Im on close to 300gms protein, 150-180gms carbs and 50-60gms fats so I might make a few adjustments and see where that takes me.

I how'd you end up with that number?

Several cans of chop chop, tuna and shakes throughout the day!

Again, I think we all make it a bit complicated. My rule of thumb is a serve of protein (and carbs) for every 2-3 hours in which you are awake. What's a serve? Probably 30-50 grams for most of us. I do this as follows:

6 am

8.30 am

11 am

1.30 pm

4.00 pm

6.30 pm

8.00 pm

10 pm

That's 8 meals. Based on 30-50 grams that's 240-400 grams. Probably about 320 grams. Whole foods are best and I prefer chicken and beef. But I also have protein shakes, fish, eggs and turkey.

That's a quick and dirty but unless you are in contest prep stage you don't need to be too fussy IMO. I'm pretty Lee Lynch said he was having 300 grams of protein a couple of weeks out from a show? Probably white fish and egg whites but nevertheless still a lot of protein.

I agree that meal frequency is largely irrelevant. More a product of personal preference than physiological necessity. Not so sure on the point he makes about eating so often being stressful and negatively affecting health, one to look into for me.

So what do you think about this? Do you think Jason Ferruggia is right?

pretty much, the multiple meals vs 3 meals a day idea came from the boxer study which was highly flawed (self reported food intake)

With IF getting a lot more attention, and protein pulse being seemly better for muscle protein synthesis than a continual stream of aminos (MPS being a product of protein synthesis and protein breakdown)

If nothing else it suggests that your not going to LOSE anything by eating in a more realistic manner, and may even benefit

Is there any truth to protein being pissed away? If you are taking more protein than your body can process then it doesn't get utilized so following that train of thought, if you only have 3 meals a day and get 100g protein at each sitting, will your body process that 100g or will some of it get wasted?

Good portion broken down into aminos remains to be proven that the body can break it all down in order to effectively utilise it all. In saying that excess aminos will pass through your system.

So to paint a very, very picture by diluting the all the technical information lets say that 50g is what is achievably digested before the source protein travels far enough through the digetive process that it becomes out waste. From that 50g you body only manages to utilise 80% of the aminos broken down (would vary from person to person based on age/lifestyle and genetic breakdown) .. potentially 60g of waste. (Very, very basic e.g)

here is everything you need to know about protein .... it's the longer more informed e.g  .

2.3.2 onwards is a good place to start in specifics
