Kickboxing or boxing would be complimentary support work for your weights. Pad work is another world of fitness even if you are good at running, it gets those slow twitch fibers working, and is good cardio as it is so easy to get motivated when doing pad work, circuits and conditioning. Great fun

For self defense though you'd want to look at a hybrid mixed martial arts type of deal, something with strikes, throws and grappling. I personally wouldn't go pure karate, TKD, Kung fu based MA's, they are to paper, sissors, rock and don't make the most of your athleticism, I think they are great for martial arts application, speed flexibility, agility whatever but not as a practical or holistic form of self defense. You want to be taught Martial arts technique but in a progressive way that allows for change and modification to best suit you.

My opinion anyway, hope no one does karate or kung fu lol. Gon get flamed!

The strikeforce fullas seem on to it, clearly as a whole they have a better ground game, haven't seen a lot of amazing strikers though. I think they are more of a fighters stable though, not sure what happens if you just rock up for shit n giggles.

Proactive is massive, a lot of people and quite social and your free to progress as you want. Competitive or just for fitness. Has a ring and a ghetto gym with a smith machine with my name on it (<3 Tiny Traps), moderately priced.

Academy is big too, has a ring and its open late, has a gym, good if your on a schedule, theres prices and contracts are BS though O__O.

The rest I dont know enough about to judge.

You ain't shit till you've tried this though

My sister does karate in Chch at the Seido club which is in Barbados St. I'm pretty sure you can google it. They always used to do a thing where you could have a free trial, but not sure if they still do that or not. Great club though and awesome people, so worth a look. She's been there for a long time and is a 4th dan black belt, so must enjoy it!

Uni Judo mate... if you ask me the best dojo there is in Auckland is Judo Kai over the shore

The Calders train at Western though and got best coach Yoshi. You know them?

yup I do , they most likely don't know me though , I train normally under Rick Littlewood, we sometimes do get Rob Levy too

the old NZ men did really well in the asian games eh brought back a bunch of gold...to be honest though I've been really busy as of late and instead of doing the usual 4 days a week I do only 1 per week...but yeah it is a real good sport to get into...unless you prefer to through punches/kicks then yeah it might not be what you're after lol

LOL i heard there was a clip of some aikido master taking on ten guys and beating the shit out of them. Then he takes on an mma dude and gets whooped.

check out Kiwi dojos- budo taijutsu combination of strikes throws locks chokes weapon use. Was the youngest brown belt in nz 1 year out from black belt until I started getting dislocated shoulders during training

I would also recommend judo or any type of grappling(sambo, wrestling, BJJ, ju jit)

Judo is good imo as a traditional martial art/sport but as an area of self defense I would suggest CQB/CQC- did that for about 6 months and imo I learned a lot more useful things for self defense than I did in my 8yrs of judo. They do have different objectives but I would agree that most traditional martial arts only focus on one aspect (grappling or just striking).

CQB also strengthens up your core, grip and neck: If you want to get into CQB, go see Tim at fight times next to crichton cobbers- he's a phase 3 instrutor under Geoff "Tank" Todd (Todd Group Personal Protection)

I have seen a 3rd Dan Karate black Belt strut into a MMA gym and proclaim that there art is "better". I mean who cares?

He lasted about 30 seconds and got tapped like a drum by a guy that had been training 4 months.

He tried a some stupid Karate Kid kick kata thing and got taken down and armbarred straight away. This happened again and again.

Now, he trains with us and has stopped in Karate.
