Off season strength training for 14-18 year olds.

Following the success of our holiday program last year, we are going to hold daily sessions at the gym between 3.30 pm and 5.00 pm. These will be aimed at young males and females who want to increase their strength for their sport. All attendees will receive initial testing, program design to meet individual goals, training supervision and ongoing testing. For more information please contact Craig at cbjmcguigan@gmail.com or 021 339 711.

Eastside Barbell Club is a not for profit incorporated society.

Lots of positive response from mainly Rugby players. Using in house training/coaching resource and outside networks at places like the NZ Academy of Sport make this an exciting opportunity for all. I will post up some information about our testing approach and program design shortly. The more I think about getting sports people strong the more I realise the close correlation with powerlifting.

Development of absolute and explosive strength will make a huge difference to any sportspersons ability and performance - its a fact! NZ has been slow off the mark in terms of incorperating more power based training to aid athletes but its slowly improving. Good on you ESB, experience and advice like this doesnt often come round this easily but when its on offer, take it! Usually its the elite athletes that will get picked up and given this type of specialised training advice.

...make some money Doc :pfft: (just kidding)

Money!? Whats that!?

I agree that NZ has been real slow on picking up the conditioning side of things especially off season. Our local league club (Hibiscus Coast Raiders) have (some coaches) adopted some of the power cardio and condition work we do by sending some of the players our way. One example is a young 17 year old Auckland U17 player who now trains with us (recently finshed a sheiko 29 along with explosive leg training with sled etc) both during the season and now off season. He was saying just the other day how lucky he has been to be able to manage the local season and the Aucks under 17 side training and games because of his conditioning and new found strength and without the usual "high speed crashes" that cause so many league injuries.

He joined us with an 80kg squat, 60kg bench and a 100kg dead. He now squats 150, benches 100 and deadlifts 200 all raw and has done this during the season. Coupled with sound nutrition he has added 10kgs to his frame and now looks the part. Off seaon he has moved onto a reduced vol sheiko 37 along with the GPP that we have adapted for his sport.. including speed, speed off the deck, flexibility and stamina.

Smart training, sound nutrition and good support. The occasional lighthearted rocket up the jacksie doesnt heart either

Love job T. Ask Captain Steak. :)

...yes, we do it because we love it

Here's something completely off track:

Question

Which would you choose if seeking someone to assist with Strength/Conditioning development?

1)A trainer who has the theoretical knowledge + all the quals with limited practical experience.

or 2)someone who has years of practical experience + proven competitive record with no specific training qualifications.

You know my view Tonka! A combination of the two! The guy with 20" guns tearing through his white labcoat!

Our approach at Eastside is to put together a team to attack the problem. A lifter with 20 years experience who can total 800+ raw, a PhD with research and practical experience in delivering testing at programs to elite athletes and a team of trainers who have experience in coaching athletes. This combination IMO provides the best solution.

I was reading something about the crusaders s+c coach on getstrength about his recommendations for becoming a coach and he ranked under the bar experience above quals. I think its hypocritical to be a strength coach and not be strong.

We have a couple of guys at ESB who are studying Sports Science. They understand the importance of being practical and becoming strong. This will allow to present a formibable package once they graduate. Plus they are learning how to train properly and not how PT's are typically taught.

this is a good point! The cource I did was utter bollocks with absoultely no understanding of strength training or exercises shown. The other side that no-one has mentioned is the nutrition and how important that can be too. You are what you eat as they say. eat junk and your preformance will typically be junk.

Program is a great idea. Does eastside run any of these sort of programs for those of us who are over 18 ?

Welcome back Kiwijuice. Those over 18 who can attend this program are welcome. If there was sufficient demand we would run them for older guys and girls.
