Confused about all the various protein powders

Hi. I'm new around here and looking for some advice.

I am a bit on the skinny side and looking to gain some weight, and a little muscle while also doing some light lifting. I'm not looking to become huge. I'm not a body builder. I'm a bit confused about the various protein powders available and am looking for guidance on what would be right for me, and the best value for money. Is there really any difference been 'Weight Gainers' and 'Protein Powder'?

I was looking at some weight gainer options, but am tempted to just get Horley's 3kg Banana flavor, because I like banana. They don't seem to have this option with the 'Weight Gainers'

I appreciate any advice I can get.

Also, what is 'loading time' ???

I appreciate your help :)

loading time might be referring to ingestion of creatine monohydrate but

that is a diff topic

there are diff types of protein's

horleys in my opinion is a great protein powder with a solid profile but whey over priced. :pfft:

milk proteins:

whey protein isolate most expensive highly absor able protein, good if you can afford it.

whey protein concentrates highly absorb able as well but not as much as isolate, but still awesome none the less and this is the one I have the most, because more affordable and more value for money than isolate.

whey casein made from cottage cheese,a slow absorbing protein ,good for the last protein shake in a day as it fuels your body with aminos while you sleep.

egg protein for the lactose intolerant folk

soy protein...nobody cares so dont bother, you want to stick with a whey of some kind.some people say that soy increases your estrogen which you dont want if you are a guy but who knows and and I aint gonna test the theory either.

I usually get whey proteins which are a mix of all of them(whey proteins) or atleast 2 of them

if you are a hardgainer I would recommend a mass gainer

here is a topic on a mass gainer I recommend

mass gainers are usually loaded with sugars which can pile on the fat ,but if your a hardgainer it can provide you with those extra calories your body needs once you start going to the gym.

pvl mutant mass

there is a strawberry bannana one here 15 pounds for 144$

or you could buy a normal protein and stock up on oats as well for your carb intake

my advice would be not to get caught in the marketing hype of products and just go by reputation, taste and price.what you want is a great tastng protein that you look forward to chugging down then something that you have to force to chugg down.

Hi Jack,

I would suggest that you look at your diet and your goals first before investing in protein powders or anything else. Your goals were posted as a little vague, that your "not a bodybuilder" and you "don't want to get huge".

Depending on your goals it might be worthwhile to think of eating real clean whole food and training consistantly rather than simply supplementing as this is what they are, supplements. Most of them are overpriced and not worth the money overall.

There are loads of people on here that will give you solid advice about training and nutrition.

Good luck.
