The Man Phil Kuklinski is heading off to Southport England to attend the 2010 60th Anniversary of the NABBA Universe on 30th October. Phil is representing NABBA/WFF New Zealand at this event & is competing in the NABBA Men Over 50 Class. This is a very tough class & Phil has trained very hard over the last year to get his body into shape for this competition. Everyone at NABBA/WFF NZ wish him well in his endeavours. Here is a brief background on his lead up.

"It has been a life long dream to get to the Mr Universe contest after reading and seeing Arnie and Co in the old muscle mags away back in the 1970's when I was a teenager. My family laughed at me when I said that will be me one day.

As far as what I do in the gym doesn't change much any time through the year as what puts the muscle on keeps the muscle on while dieting and I stay 3 to 4 kg away from contest shape anyway year round. The only thing that changes is diet where things like bread and simple carbs are stopped at 12 weeks out and of course dairy products are dropped. With working shift work bodybuilding can be tricky and you cant let yourself become over tired. It also helps if you have a supportive employer which I have at Ballance Agri Nutrients where I am a Petrochemical shift Engineer.

The one thing I have noticed as I have had passed the 50 year old mark, is it takes a lot longer to warm up the joints in the gym and a little longer to recover but the cool thing with bodybuilding is that you can improve even at my age. I am stronger and larger now at 50 than when I was 30 or 40 years old. The other thing I like about bodybuilding is that mentally it is a challenge and this positively carries over into other areas of life. It makes you stronger and more confident, determined, so that you can challenge other areas of your life like work, study etc etc."

Thank you to everyone for your kind words and support. To Rod and his team and to Graeme Lancefield, thanks guys. These people have been in touch with me every single day over the last couple of weeks offering there support, encouragement and any travel details I need sorting out.

Well here at work at 4.30am in the morning and feeling knackered ( luckily its been quiet night) , a couple of hours to go and then home for a sleep today before hitting the gym tonight in my final week of preparation and then fly out next wednesday. Im sure I am in better condition at the moment than in Christchurch the other week and think there is a few things with my diet and training this coming week that can get me even better.

Going to enjoy the pain this next 6 days in the gym. Cheers Phil K.

OK guys well last chest and arm workout tonight all done and legs done yesterday. Will have a go at some back and shoulders in the morning and then thats it, thats all I can do. Fly out of Auckland 11.30pm wed night via LA and about 29 hors later get into London. From there catch a plane to Manchester and then have a mini bus to take us to Southport. Should be there about 7.00pm Thursday British time. So have Thursday and Friday night to recover and be ready for the monsters on saturday.

Good to here from you Wheels. Do you remember when you were at my gym "Elevation" and at the end of your leg workout I made yo go outside on the street with 30kg DB's and lunge right up to the corner. You collapsed just as you got to the corner then got up and turned around and managed to get all the way back. I knew then even if you didn't that you were a champion. Now you are a NZ and Australian National champion and up there with the best internationally.

Phil reports he has travelled well & feeling good. Currently having breakfast at the hotel flanked by some mean looking Russians, Brazilians & Romanians. Hope he has got the NZ flag flying at his table. Carb up day, tanning & posing practice before Rego later today. Go Buddy \:D/

Got a text from Phil and there is 16 in his grade. I feel the excitement that he is experiencing and the satisfaction of the end of dieting for the year. Sounds like he is in great condition. One good thing is that he will be up early in the shedule so can enjoy watching the rest of the show. Go for it and pose hard tomorrow.

Some early pics in NABBA Men Class II from a Slovenian Website. Fck some bloody monsters. Top two could rock it with Jay & Phil no sweat. Justin Wessels (54) placed a fantastic third in this class.

Hi guys from here in London. Thanks to everyone for your support. Well what a huge long but cool day it was here on saturday. For me personally it was a lifetimes dream fulfilled competing at the Universe. It was fantastic to place in the top 6 and to have my family there to see it. It was quite emotional being handed a medal and trophy and seeing my family only a few rows out in the crowd cheering. Im sure I was in the best condition I have ever been, but I had to be to be in with a chance. One of the many highlights for me was the respect and standing the NZ silver fern has. I was wearing some black NZ gear with the fern on getting some photos done with my kids and the trophy and the comments from people in the huge crowd was very humbling. New Zealand is very highly regarded overseas, its such an honour to be able to represent it. After the Contest was over and we had cracked some champagne back at the hotel and the kids had crashed for the day I went out with the Aussie team to a Italian restaurant for pizza and beer to celebrate our placings. Was a great night. So a week or 2 off now and some sightseeing and then back home to plan for next year. Thanks to all for your txts and support. Cheers Phil K
