form cheat or stickler for technique

Recommended Posts

As long as the cheating doesn't put you at a greater risk of injury then I have no problem with it. I think everyone should get plenty of experience using proper form before doing any cheating, would allow people to gauge how much their cheating and associated risks better etc. Cheating a bit on heavy sets can help you get some experience using that weight, both mentally and physically. When you first try that weight with strict form you can think "I've done this weight before, no worries!"

Cheating is cool unless it 1inch squats etc

1/2inch 100kg squat observed today. :pfft:

i train at my own gym, but had a sesh a couple weeks back and left my belt there. went back a few days later to get it and I seen 1/2inch 100kg squats. Honestly thought people just exaggerated alot on the net when talking about 1/2inch squats, but its actuly out there.

Calculated cheating!

I don't think you should get mid way into a set and decide to cheat, you should plan it

this is my thought too my idea of a cheat set for example is using a weight you know you can only preacher curl one or two reps well for your cheat set you do it standing and with slight swing rep 6 or 8.

i always do it..... how else do you reach true failure on a set

My thought on a cheat set isnt including assisted reps so for bench for me say I wouldnt call having training partner assist as a cheat is this what you mean luigi?

they just need a bullet had an arguement with a trainer today when I said look at that fuckwit squatting 3inches deep her reply was some people cant squat deeper due to flexibility f*ck OFF WOMAN 3INCH SQUAT HE JUST SCARED HE CANT GET BACK UP IF HE DOES IT PROPERLY :pfft: :pfft:

lol@ can't squat coz of flexibility! fucking stretch then! if you don't squat deep you're a pussy :P most people who say they can't squat deep because of this or that just need to be taught proper technique they almost all usually squat knees over toes and through the balls of their feet.

From a pl point of view I try my best not to cheat on the core lifts (squat bench dead) cos it can enforce some bad habits eg for a bit I started to bounce reps on bench when they got hard tough and now my off the strength chest is piss weak. For my assistance exercises im all about the weight, more weight I can use the better. So ill use a lil bit of body english but no ultra swinging or heaving.

A question along similar lines, would doing 10 shitty shrugs with 300kg be better/worse thn 10 perfect form shrugs with 100kg?

I thought the PL side of things would be more strict more of the time for that same reason as you stated TT

As far as your example goes re shrugs I find traps are a muscle for me that respond best by heavy heavy shrugs with less ROM and strictness but just heavy ass weight

My 10 cents from a SM view point.

When building mass (off season) I train like a powerbuilder - lots of heavy compound movements with some high rep stuff on top. I tend to use good form until last reps / sets where I'll cheat somewhat.

When it comes to pre-comp phase its all about shifting weight. My 200kg bar rows are diabolical (but better than many I've seem with 50kg! ). No perfect form reps at 80-100kg are going to help me lift 140kg+ Atlas stones. However I always work to keep my form good enough to avoid injury and alway train core hard to prevent back strains.

Its a fine balance in my opinion. No point cheating form on the big 3 lifts if you're a PLer (or you'll likely do so by default in comp when near max = red lights!) but assistance exercises you've got some room to move.

BBers probably also find a balance, a bit of cheating here & there wont hurt and may even help bust through a plataeu. Don't make it a habit that takes over your training though.

I don't view this as cheating, just flat out doing it wrong!

But it could be referred to as partial reps and that's just another way of making the set harder (not in the case of a 1" squat though!!!)

To me cheating is when you have to use body english to move the weight.

Anyone have any exercises they regularly cheat on? Or cheat on if they ever do cheat?

Also, any exercises people believe that cheating on is just a big big no no?

Lets leave free weight squats and deadlifts outta this, I think that goes with out saying

yeah that was one of the examples. get some body sway going for last few reps.

Disargee with that, I think with the lying hamstring curl the weight stack is right there so you can drop the weight to squeeze out the last couple of reps.

Ive tried your way before but ended up pulling my hammy.

If it works for you I guess its not wrong.
