Was in Hams last night for work and sat across from Lee Priest at breakfast this morning. Wanted to go up and have a yarn but figured he would be over that shit from the night before.

 when else would you ever get a chance to talk to him? Damn, I know what you mean but screw that I would've gone up regardless- once in a lifetime chance!

Well did my first show in Hamilton last night and the way it was run maybe my last. You didn't know when you were going on when to get ready and there were plenty in the same boat as well myself and few guys had 3-5 mins to pump up and be ready to give our best, they lost the music for the few of the competitors as well. In saying that I enjoyed my night routine and the experience can tick that off my list of things to do. A couple days of rest and some family time and back into the gym :?

Shame to hear that, that is part of the reason the whole sport is so disjointed at the moment. Organisational problems!

when else would you ever get a chance to talk to him?

Yeah was a bit gutted but wouldn't have lived it down from the crew if I made a big deal of it, never mind.

True, but if you ever get another chance too meet Lee or any other well known IFBB Pro for that matter you know what to do..

I caught up with Lee at the show and was blown away by how approachable and easy to talk to he really was. I've found lots of the NZ pros more arrogant than him :pfft: had a good yarn to him and got the obligatory photo for my facebook profile.

THE SHOW AS I SAW IT

Yes the show was run a bit poorly. There were a lot of missed cues where we were left waiting for ages with no one on stage, wrong music played for the routines, delays for curious reasons like the judges and sponsors discussing among themselves which one of them was gonna award the medals while the competitors are waiting in stage for the results. The ridiculously run posedowns where some went for ten minutes. The DJ was absolutely crap, I saw him do a soundcheck at some stage before the show started but constantly got the volume level wrong and appeared to fall asleep halfway through the show and couldn't get the music on at all.

The MC was not that good. I hear she was a last minute ring in but she had no timing, and was a bit boring. And why is it that Moe comes across a bit sleazy at every show. Did he have to present the awards to the bikini girls? Lol. Would probably do the same if I was in his shoes

It may sound like I didn't enjoy the show, I did, everyone did get to do their routines (some twice haha) and I realise it is a mammoth effort to get carb depleted bodybuilders to do their thing, its just that it was a bit stunted and I have seen it done better.

However we were rewarded with some awesome physiques. The junior men was a closely fought classic battle of conditioning versus mass with Jhoon Laws finely tuned physique taking the Gold, although the taller, larger Elliot Grant will give him another good run next week if he can come in a bit dryer.

The masters 50+ lineup was probably the best I have ever seen in this class with the ultra grainy Peter Hunt looking unbelievable and taking an obvious win.

The Novice men classes had a few standouts including the winner of 70-80 Teina O'malley who was so sharp he will make a few of the leading open class guys watch their back. Although I think he would be better off modeling cos all the girls seem to drool over his Sonny Bill Williams physique.

Was good to see 8 competitors in the 80-90. Lack of quad mass though, most being taller leaner guys. After 2 consecutive 2nds, Ross finally taking the Gold. He placed 3rd at the nats in this class last year though, not sure how he managed to sneak into this class again???

A very soft but huge Poly took the 90+. Biggest triceps on stage for the night though, bet he could bench a bit!

Bikini class was hot, the figure girls all class and Sheta looked absolutely amazing. Unsure how she didn't get the results that looked like she had placed above the other girls. Not the only class I didn't agree with the judges on the night though.

Classic men had only two competitors, and while I commend Alastair on taking it with a nice lean package it was a shame to see what can be a great class won by a guy who's only really been training for 6 months or so.

Open mens classes were a little sparse on competitors. 2 in the under 70s with a massively improved Duncan taking the Gold with a shredded to the bone package and the always impressive 'young Arnold' Kurt Von Beale taking his 70-80 class uncontested.

The 80-90 open men class was really the highlight of the night with a salt n pepper Poly, Robert, taking on Daniel Amos and Timmy from the Onekawa Stables in Vegas.

Daniel had more thickness and freaky parts but Robert had the overall symmetry and possibly just a tad leaner. As it turned out the judges votes were tied from prejudging and another round of judging ensued at the night show. This left us with a ten minute posedowns while the judges talked amongst each other which nearly killed the big guys :pfft:

Robert ended up the winner, but there really was nothing in it and will be interesting next week at the nats especially once Sanjeev is thrown in the mix.

The open 90-100 was won convincingly by Garth VDM who will be doing his third show on consecutive weekends next week. Interesting to see if he can hold his conditioning. He was 92kg on weigh-in, wouldn't want to drop any more weight as is looking like the 90-100 class will be more winnable than the 80-90.

The overalls had a big Australia's next top Model moment when the MC announced the Overall womens Figure title to Jamie Onekawa. The crowd erupted then silenced when it became evident 30 seconds later that the MC was just introducing the 3 finalists and the other 2 trundled on stage. As it happened Jamie didn't win and that was a somewhat unpopular decision, again one I didn't agree with either.

The open mens lineup was a thriller. All class winners stayed and jumped on stage for a massive posedown, the first time I've ever seen virtually everyone do it and the stage was packed. In the end there really only 4 in it. The big Poly Robert, Garth, Teina and the masters 50+ winner Peter Hunt. The conditioning Peter brought was a level above what I've ever seen on him and 2 steps above any one else. In fact his wet tanning was a sight to behold. He ended up taking the overall title and I couldn't agree more on that decision. With Darryn Onekawa and Steve Orton out if the picture this year I would say this is Peters best shot at the overall Mr NZ title. I look forward to next weeks showdown with Sanjeev. At worst he will have a good run at the world title in Turkey later in the year.

We were also treated to a couple of guest poses. The lovely Rosa gave a quick demo in the morning ( fully clothed but still looked amazing). Grant Pieterse gave us a look at what a Pro body builder looks like in FULL bulk mode. Looking bigger than ever but weird to see a guy who normally competes on leanness and conditioning get his kit off in that shape.

Highlight of the night was Lees guest pose. Absolutely amazing to see a top 6 Olympia in fantastic shape right up close and personal. Came out into the crowd and did a guest pose that seemed to go forever. A true pro.

If anyone is looking for pics go to the usual Muscle Imaging and Go Figure Websites, but also go have a look at Brians Fit Figures website. http://www.fitfigures.co.nz Brian MacFarlane took over 350 from the obvious vantage point a Judge has.

The show on the weeknd was a huge success and a big thank you goes out to all that helped. Like any show it was not perfect but I would like to clarify a couple things......

No Music was Lost, The way people are downloading their music is not always compatible with the venue's systems. This is why we ask for music to be brought in the night before so we can check. As it was many competitors brought music in just before competing.

Also as for the scrawny guy...Soundsgood.....I will have you know that very young man...17 years was a volunteer and has volunteered at shows since the age of 13....he was backstage helping and was asked to go onstage a couple times as the sponsors had noit shown and help was required and he did so without complaint. Had he known he would have dressed appropriately and as for puny thats just mean and you should be ashamed of yourself. HE does not work at Pac n save and he is a top student and Rugby Player...so pull your head in and learn some manners :naughty:  Also, He is my Beautiful Son and a like a son and I will not stand for anyone to bag him EVER! How dare you attack a young man you know nothing about! Very sad. But does say alot about you as a person. Better to be thought a fool than to open your Mouth and remove all doubt...perhaps you should write that down. Ignorance and cruelty is just ugly :naughty: You must be a pretty miserable person.

You know Hamish, I also would like to say "shame on You" as you too are a parent and How would you like it if i bagged your son? I hope you have the Man bits required to apologise to him and myself at Nationals because once again he will be helping out as he does simply for the Love of the sport. Again yu should be ashamed of your Immature behaviour.

Fair call Michelle,

Probably saw that coming huh Soundsgood?!

Apart from that little diatribe I enjoyed your write up Soundsgood - thank you for taking the time to do so (Tom agrees & won't have to attend any shows in future if you give such indepth reports - leaves him more time for Strongman training & shooting things! ).

Any chance someone can list the class winners?

Cheers

Nate

Agreed. Those comments were completely out of line. Got my wires crossed and had your son mixed up with someone else. Even so, Massive apologies for any harm caused. Tried to ring you at the shop to apologise but no reply. Sent u a PM.

I'm curious to those that saw Lee guest pose, how did his massive tattoo effect if at all his detail in back shots. Would love to see, because I've always wondered since he got it.

The tattoo was slightly distracting, as you had to look hard to see all the massive cuts in his back. Didn't have any base tan on, just a top coat so would poss look better with a proper prep.

Mike - in light of what Soundsgood said about Lee's tattoo detracting from his cuts will you still be getting the butterfly tramp stamp?

You could look at it two ways, on one hand it might prevent the judges from seeing your Xmas tree, the upside is when you're out dancing at 3am some people will really, really, really like it! :pfft:

Couldn't help myself big fella!

Some pics of Lee from the show would be cool if anyone has any?

Good form on the apology SG. Back to the comp results if anyone has them?

Awwww, thanks! Ah well...I did my best (only decided to do it 8 weeks ago). May do the class again next year! But have plans to get into the O-35's figure if I can get my small frame to get some much needed muscle.

Shane... things were a little disorganised backstage, but I dont think it was any less than other shows (that Ive attended anyway). There was little communication on where the show was up to, so in the ladies room I took it upon myself to keep up with what numbers where being called out and then was able to tick classes off the list as the show ran. Being in tune with whats going on should allow plenty of time for pumping up.

I'd love to see more advice for the novice girls backstage...maybe there are a few of us that can do this. There often seems to be a lot of them standing around not knowing what to do, and quite stunned in the excitement. I helped out where I could, giving advice on pumping up, untwisting bikini straps, and reminding girls to keep the smiles on at all times.

The womens room was great. I lent out a couple of bikinis, my bikini bite, lipsticks, reebok band, my GHD's and even a pair of earrings to a girl that forgot hers. Nice to see it all come back!
