Commercially Prepared and Cooked Sweet Potato (Kumara)

Recommended Posts

Hey all just trying to sort out my food for the Ozzy comp and have hit a snag with the Kumara part of my carb in. Ozzy officials will not allow home cooked Kumara into the country unless it is commercially prepared and packed.

So with that in mind does anybody know if this is done or even sold in NZ?

Before you all say go buy it over there, I don't have the time! Arrive late at night before the day of the comp so all food must be with me. :D

You can get frozen commercial oven kumara chips in the supermarket, probs will be finding a source to nuke it when you get there unless you can sort that out easy?

Hmm let me see pay an extra $200 to get there at midday or get in at 18:30 for $200 less :pfft:

Yeah that's the last resort figure the sodium may be a little high. Looking into getting Coles to deliver some food to the hotel before we arrive, so problem may be solved yet.

Yeah, forgot to mention the sodium count on it...(you already probably done this) but has the hotel kitchen able to assist with helping you out at all?

Waiting on a response from them. They have a microwave in the room (I think) which is all good for nuking the Kumara. Honestly though being a Travelodge I'm not expecting any help from them.

I think the babyfood route may be the best bet to. Unfortunately it is not very texturised and you will need alot of it so there is the expense. Bummer about your flights, I managed to get on Emirates leaving midday on Thursday which gives me some time to shop so if you want me to find some kumera, im more than happy to nuke you some over there and get it to you. Im staying at some skuzzy Bondi Beach 3star so if you are in close proximaty let me know.

Actually being looking at going that way if things don't pan out. Major problem is your only getting about 7-10G Carbs per serve so will have to eat alot.

Preparing to take cover :pfft:

The reason is fairly simple, it works (for me). Since my first comp I have played with all sorts of combos clean, junk, rice, couscous ect ect. My Carb in has worked best the last 2 comps than it ever has and it seems to come down to a combo of a few foods one of which is Kumara.

If you have an alternative I'm all ears I'm always happy to try something else and see if it works.

Well, it seems that a lot of the time kumara is recommended for its low GI rating. Trouble is, our kumara doesn't have a low GI. In fact, it's higher than some potatoes.

From http://www.glycemicindex.com -

Nardine potato, boiled = 70

Sweet potato, kumara = 77

In the US, they must have different sweet potatoes which are not like our kumara.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), boiled = 44

Anyway, that's the academic reason - but I'm no veteran competitor. If kumara works for you, stick with it!

Emirates flight at midday! You leaving from Auckland?

Leaving out of chch Thursday pm and returning Monday pm chch, most of the other flights were 6 hours going all over the place so I opted for the least air time. Emirates is abit of a pain because its a massive plane so boarding takes ages.

Nice EK418/419 is a great service used it about 7 times in the last 18 months most of it heading to Thailand. Boarding is actually very quick (especailly if your a Gold member) so wouldn't worry about that to much.

PS they don't serve free champers in economy on Emirates you have to pay for it, however $8 for a glass of Moet is pretty cheap :pfft:

You must go in style, me, im cattle class but requested my seats and low cal meal this time, no way im getting stuck down the back by the lavs. Don't know how the champers would go with altitude and dehydration supps. They might have to wheelchair me off lol.

I think you'll find the kumara/sweet potato that's common in the US is the same as the Beauregard kumara here. It has orange flesh, but it sweeter than the red-purple sweet potato which has an off-white kinda yellow flesh.

I did wonder about that, Sportsgirl. The orange kumara are easier to peel, too. But there still doesn't seem to be much difference in the GI rating:

Sweet potato, orange = 77

(assuming this is the vege we're talking about)

Sweet potato, orange flesh, peeled, cut into pieces, boiled for 8 min (2006) = 61
