Coeliac disease / Gluten Intolerance

Pee

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would post this as a note or advice more than asking for advise, because apparently 1 in every 100 people have it and most do not know.

I was diagnosed with it about a month ago although I weight about 150kgs and am overweight, which is the opposite of most symptoms.

And I reacon there could be a heap like me out there, I only noticed after not drinking a beer for probably a month, training and dieting hard but not loosing any weight, actually putting more on, then had a beer one night and my palms broke out in heaps of tiny blisters.

Since stopping eating any wheat based products and probably eating more carbs & fats and veggies I have lost 5kg in 2 weeks.

The docs theory is that unlike others who simply starve, My body was going into starvation mode becuase it could not get the nutrients through my guts and intestines and stored as much as it could, plus I was always hungry, eating more than I should have,

Might just be me but 1 in 100 seems like a lot, maybe next time you have a fat client or mate who swears they are doing everything right, get there docs to check them.

Cheers,

I had a terrible year in 2009 with bloating, headaches, constant bowel problems and headaches. This went on every day for most of the year until I went gluten free including eliminating oatmeal.

I have been fine ever since and am scared to go back on gluten.

I substitute Rice flakes for Oatmeal and mix with eggs to build an omelette.

I eat Beans,Rice,kumara,rice cakes,potatoes.

Just a warning you will probably get laughed at my your GP if your fat like me, he did, as its symptoms are normally wasting way... he wasn't laughing after I insisted after reading about it online and the result was positive.

Where did you find your research? Just want to check if I fit into this category or if I am indeed eating the wrong foods...

Hmm that's interesting. I too have a bloat problem (so I can't even workout in the afternoon), bowel issues and general sluggishness. If I eat pasta, that'll basically be me for the day. I'm starting to wonder if it's the oats I'm eating (The bloat starts around 2pm). The rest of my diet is fine. When I'm on low carb, I tend not to have any problems at all.

I'm not saying I'm gluten intolerant or anything, but perhaps I'm just a wee sensitive to gluten and could try an alternative.

Apparently oats can affect gluten some gluten intolerant people and not others. Most symptoms cleared but not until I cut out oatmeal did they all clear.

As with you I was ok on my diet but when i started bulking that's when everything went haywire. I tried eliminating all sorts of things one by one and keeping a diary.

I had to give up a mass gainer protein because many of them have maltodextrin derived from wheat.

Sometimes gluten intolerance can show on a test if it is as a result of Coeliac disease but even if it is not positive you can still have some sort of intolerance. An elimination diet is the only way to prove it and in my case it was noticeable within days.

How were you tested?

Just a blood test, they can detect the gluten antibodies or something, so technically im only Intolerant and not a Coeliac, as I would have had to fly back and have a film crew shoved up my arse... I decided it was cheaper just to stop eating it and see how I felt.

Have herd that you should not cut out something entirely out of your diet such as gluten as intolerance will increase. Then when you do end up having even a small amount you react more than you would if you had occasional minimal amounts.

Yea but you can also have a 50-80% greater risk of Bowel or Stomach cancer aswell... I would rather get blisters on the rare occasion I forget or am not sure what's in something personally.

Where did you find your research?

Honestly I just googled "Reaction to beer" or something similar, and followed my nose, yanks call it celiac so might help with your info.

(I cried for 3 days when I found out I would never drink beer again).

Are you feeling weak?

Nah I feel great, I don't expect the weight loss to continue that fast, good chance alot of it was swelling and water retention, but the scales are going down slowly. But the general lethargic hazz has lifted and I can work alot clearer.

Cheers,

Is that increase due to eating Gluten? I guess the majority of the population is stuffed then , Oh well! better rap myself in cotton wool...

I avoid grains as much as possible....but will be the first to say that I"m prone to the odd mishap in the form of Subway, almost every client Ive worked with that has eliminated grains have seen improvement"s in their health and body-composition.When you look at Glutens association with over 200 chronic illnesses and conditions such as Cancer,Osteoporosis,Digestive disorders,Brain disorders etc... I strongly believe that we should make an effort to avoid grain consumption. But Gluten is just the starting point the below link details why.

http://coachrouse.wordpress.com/2009/05 ... on-grains/

Now before everyone starts shaking their head.....why not at least eliminate all grains for a period and see how your health improves.Another resource I recommend is the book "Dangerous Grains" by James Braley, M.D and Ron Hoggan,MA

Some more interesting information oh grains can be found here:

Theres a big difference between gluten intolerance and coeliac disease. Coeliacs are actually allergic to gluten it attacks the lining of their intestinal walls and stops the body from being able to absorb nutrients from food. There is no other option for these people but to eliminate it completely. Thats liek telling someone who is allergic to nuts that they shouldn't eliminate them completely??!!

Also Some people can be allergic to gluten and not test positive for coeliac disease.

Gluten intolerance is when the body has a less than positive reaction. But not an allergic reaction. Bloating and stuff like that are often common issues people have. For people who are intolerant they will find they benefit from excluding it from their diet but don't have to.

My doctor tells me Im intolerant coz I get really bad cramps and coz my excema. Its just fucken hard to eliminate it coz they sneak it into everything!!!

It must be a relief Pee to be diagnosed. Bet your feeling so much better!!

Yea its great, its a pain where I live because I cannot buy any of the replacement food, but ill make do with homemade sushi and rice crackers, I have that song in my head though "I think im turning Japanese" lol.

Yup I used to get bad excema under my arms, apparently something do with with close to limf nodes or something.

I have lost all faith in doctors though, after probably 10 years of knowing something wasn't right & everything from abdominal scans to brain scans & being told I was a hypochondriac and then having to demand they run a blood test after reading about it on the Internet im really pissed off.
