One leg shorter than the other...

Hi everyone, this is a serious thread.. Due to surgery my left leg is now slightly shorter than my right by a cm or so. It hasn't really been noticeable too much, but I've started to notice it more the more I lift. I was wondering what effect if any this would have on the symmetry of my body..

e.g. with deadlifts, barbell curls and what not, would the weight distribution be even on my left and right side? Or would one side be taking more of the weight? Also how would you recommend I remedy this problem? I've started doing my exercises so that my right leg (the longer one) is positioned slightly more forward or slightly back than the left foot, but I'm not sure if this evens up the weight distribution??

Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks!

In my completely inexpert opinion, I wouldn't think it would have too much of an effect on barbell curls, but you'll probably be pushing more with the longer leg on squats and deadlifts.

You could try putting an insert into the sole of the shoe of the shorter leg. If it's only 1cm, it shouldn't take that much packing.

On the plus side, you should find it easier to walk anti-clockwise around hills now. :wink:

I"d consider working with a skilled practitioner...... not something you want to muck around with hip wear and tear and SI joint dysfunctions can be an issue depending on how much of a leg length discrepancy there is reason to suggest that your organs may get squished on the side that your hip is hiked up on. Not knowing your background etc...... I'm loathed to make any solid suggestions......If you get a chance to check out "The Pain Free Program", by Anthony Carey....it should give you a clearer picture of how posture influences pain. I'm also not 100% sure that a heel lift will fix the issue... not addressing the root cause.Some soft tissue work may be another avenue to explore..... my uneducated guess is that your QL and deep hip flexor muscles may need some attention.

So ive been seeing a chiropractor because my back was seasing up n my hip flexors are fucked...kk anyway....Xrays showed that my left leg is quite alot shorter than the other, apparently 40% of the population is like this.

I was born like this so you are a different case, but the doc said he would not usaly suggest shoe implants because the body would be so used to it now.

my knee clicks a lot, probably because of my retarded leg, so u might wana watch some of those joints.

But, you are not alone.. :lol:

Whoa snap Monarching!! I have fucked hip flexors too. They too tight and make my bum stick out lol.

But yeh my chiro told me most people have one leg shorter than the other and its no big deal. I think it would be real high impact stuff like running that would be the only thing that you might notice problems with.

Pilates and core stability exercises will help though to minimise any issues. Your body will adapt :nod:

Hi guys thanks for the replies.

I see what youre saying about alot of people having shorter legs than the other, but mine was due to surgery so it may be more shorter than 'average'. A portion of the bone from my quads (forget the name) was cut so its shorter - I actually have metal rods in both legs. In fact when I stand up straight, one side of my body is leaning towards the left (shorter leg) - I don't know if anyone else has it this severe, or if this is also in fact quite normal aswell.

Anyways thanks for the replies, doesnt look like its too much of a problem so I'll just go back to doing everything normally now without worrying about different foot positions \:D/

hey.. yeah I have an appointment with my surgeon soon I might just have a wee chat to him about it and ask if its anything to worry about
