What would you say to someone that DOESN'T DEADLIFT?

i did stiff leg deads as my main hamstring exercise and found this was suffice for lower back training on top of all the other stuff i would do for training, my spinal erectors and lower back were big and strong even from not deadlifting.

You were deadlifting. Not conventionally, but all the variants still focus on the same group of muscles essentially, it just shifts the emphasis around a bit.

Yeah I've corrected people and given advice etc etc but I still see them in the gym the next week still doing the same old piss poor technique and routine some people just don't wanna leave their ego at the door coz they know if they get back to basics and use proper form or follow a proper routine their poundages are going to plummet. The only people they are kidding are themselves. People who show a genuine willingness to learn and try something that they didn't read in the back of men's health, I have a lot of time for. Unfortunately they are few and far between.

Okay here are a few facts, Yes you can get resonable leg development from leg press, lunges etc

yes you can build great back development without deadlifts.

But 99.999% of the time you compare those who deadlift with those that don't and those that squat vs those that don't.....

guess what?

Those who squat and deadlift will most likely have better leg and back development. Sure Jay Cutler doesn't squat now but that doesn't mean he's never done one. I am almost certain he would have performed some squat variation and or deadlift variation when he started training. What people fail to realize is that these guys 1. are on a shit load of gear and 2. have established a good foundation of mass before they started doing these routines that you see floating round BB mags and websites.

Jay still squats and deadlifts dont forget we only see the pumped up versions of their trasining normally 4 or less weeks out from comp we dont see them training when they are 300lbs+ in the off season he be smashing some heavy ass squats and deads for sure we all know ronnie did!!

Hi latest training vid has his squatting free weight in fact, he only used the smitty for so long because he had hip uses

Definately a fantastic exercise, both for getting stronger(whole body) and for adding muscle to the entire frame(especially the under worked posterior chain), however some of bbuilding best bodies have been built without deadlifting being a major component, in fact for the better part of a decade they were out of vogue(pretty much until yates turned up in 92 and stated that he did them regulary).

I and some of the other members who first became aware of the sport in the 80's can probably remember going through Flex and Muscle Mags where Deadlifting was barely mentioned!

Where deadlifts excell, especially in the early years of training, is that along with squats, no other exercise contributes to adding muscle to ones frame as much as deads.The whole body metabolic stimulation is massive!

As bbuilding is an asthetic based sport, some may find that after a while they need to de emphasize them to reduce their oblique hypertrophy(as obliques tend to grow faster than rectus abdominus), others with naturally small waists can use them productively weithout this being a problem.

Although currently it's a macho thing to say that everyone is doing them or should be doing them or they are a puss, the fact remains that not everyones structure is suited to performing a (conventional) deadlift. Some with disadvantageous levers, injuries or flexibility issues can better benefit from modified versions(sumo, rack pulls, romanian etc).

Interesting qoute from Jon Paul Sigmarrson as well, he also died deadlifting, so for him it probably was the dream way to go out! Hell of an athlete, I still remember him pipping OD Wilson in the WSM's very last event!

I don't do them. But then again Im not exactly trying to achieve this...

no other exercise contributes to adding muscle to ones frame as much as deads

and also my back is hypermobile so I have to strengthen it in a full range of motion which is mostly pilates/ballet/swissball shit.

Ultimately though I don't think you benefit much from any exercise if your technique is crap, your training schedule inconsistent and your diet is poorly.

I have never deadlifted regularly as i don't like the movement and the thickening of the waist for the weight i had to use. My main back exercise has always been heavy bent over rows. On the other hand I do heavy stiff leg deadlifts for lower back, hams :)

it happened in the gym. unsure if it was while he was deadlifting though

Wasn't a heart attack it was the aorta tearing away from the heart, similar to how kiwi BBer BJ Johns died. Stems from a heriditary condition no doubt aggravated by extreme body weight & training.
