it has no effect on losing fat and gaining lean muscle apart from containing caffeine but i doubt its enough to have any kind of effect on fat loss. it is fine to drink coke zero it moderation when dieting. im not sure on the difference between coke zero and diet coke, i just stick to coke zero. might have a can every 2nd day kind thing.

in my opinion, if you are going to drink any kind of coke then the standard coca cola is the best one to drink as it has no aspartame in it and in terms of a moderate amount effecting your diet are negligible

What's wrong with aspartame?

From what I understand (disclaimer - I'm no scientist) the jury is still very much out on the aspartame issue.

I used to read a couple of local health focused magazines and in the end stopped buying both because one was obsessively anti aspartame and never stopped banging on about the evils of it, while the other pretty much said that the evidence doesn't show that it's evil.

I can't say I've spent much time looking into it - I've been a Diet Coke drinker since I was 15, and now drink Coke Zero when I have a cola flavoured drink, and I don't make any excuses for it.

I'd like to read compelling evidence one way or the other - but I've got better things to do that read random blogs by opinionated hot chicks (link above) where it appears that they are just regurgitating the stuff from magazines, not presenting a balanced analysis of the evidence.

Putting aside the aspartame issue (side effects of it on the body), I'm inclined to think there are some consequences for BB'ers if you want to get lean/ stay lean. For example, the caffeine - good thing or bad; the sodium and phosphorus (water retention), oh, and the metabolic spike caused by the sweetener....

I'd personally still steer clear of it if you really want to get lean in a hurry.

Thanks for all the quick responses, so much information  I did have concerns about what it did once it left your mouth! It all makes sense though. Water fufills you just as much, I'm gonna go as far to say that it satisfies a coke craving!

haha, i have the same dilemma when deciding whether or not to have a sugar free lime juice mixed with plain soda water. I know that normal straight water is OK but i don't know whether the soda with lime in it is for sure. :-s

So water it is unless i get really desperate.

To think a couple of years ago i was busy tossing up at the McDonalds drive through whether a Mac Attack was going to be a sufficent lunch or whether i needed a boss buger or something to go with it. Now i am worried about have a low calorie lime juice in soda water.

Have i lost the plot or have i just found it

All or nothing ay guys.

The "M" word. Moderation.

I'm busy trying to gain lean muscle, not the easiest for me to get but going for it. Haven't gone all out dieting extremely hard as I value my sanity (and so do those around me) so have the odd treat no matter whether it's a 1/2 inch of milk in my coffee or a pizza or alcoholic drink (the last 2 might be once a week).

You still need the odd treat for all the hard work you put in, a small reward. Unless you have a competition coming up that you want to "win" there's no real need to be completely anal about it.

I had Coke Zero all through last year's diet as it was my only treat apart from coffee. They both got cut in the last week, but during the diet it did me no harm at all.

My vote is for Coke Zero - always some in the fridge.

I couldnt agree more oldfella. I see so many people get anal about the smallest details when then arnt even competing. Bodybuilding is a fantastic sport and I love the challenge and everything that goes with it like so many other people here but IMO its not a 24/7, 365 job to be perfect. If Coke Zero is the worst thing in your diet then your probably doing pretty well.

If your dieting for a show then yeah its time to assess much closer, if not dont stress the small stuff.

phenylalanine and aspartame same diff huh?

I have wayyyy too much of this shit, i don't know if it enough to effect me though, im sure after all the supps and diet drinks i have it must add up, anyone know at what dosage it would be regarded as toxic/dangerous?

This year is prob the first year I've consciously started looking for aspartame in the ingredients of my diet. try avoiding that shit, its everywhere! That and stevia taste like arse and is expensive.

I need a new drink of choice...time to sipp on xtend all day 8)

No they are completely different. Phenylalanine is an amino acid. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener made up of phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. It is the combination of the three ingredients that causes the potential health issues.

There are no issues with phenylalanine unless you suffer from phenylketonuria however it's such a small percentage of people that most people aren't likely to have an issue with phenylalanine. If you did then you pretty much have to avoid most complete proteins, or any incomplete protein that has phenylalanine not just aspartame.

I think a board certified neurosurgeon holds more water than a bunch of randomly put together studies that when looking deeper will find conflicts of interest.Do you really trust the FDA coming out saying Aspartame is safe? Please... look at their abysmal track record.....

Ever heard of industry sponsored research?, funny how all the tests in the below link show no adverse effects of Aspartame, note that G.D Searle created Aspartame!

http://www.dorway.com/industry.html

Funny how Snopes thinks Aspartame is safe when looking at non industry sponsored research shows that Aspartame does in-fact cause adverse effects.
