I've never even thought about speed when deadlifting. I'm too busy trying to make sure everything else is set up properly.... Too much brain power required for me :pfft: Perhaps if I master thinking about speed too my deadlift will go up a bit.

Ass down, head up, stay tight, stand up as fast as you can.......it's not complicated, don't make it.

You say its not complicated and I agree picking the weight up is easy but getting the best out of yourself takes the correct technique a 200kg deadlifter may actually be a 230kg lifter with some technique, there is a lot to it I dont care what anyone says about it there is a shit load to get right, feet placement, toe position, hand grip, thumb grip, shoulders back, man its never ending and I love it!!!! yes I been pulling for a while but have just had this breakthrough, call me slow  but I think with the extra speed off the floor my dead gonna prosper.....

I just checked your blog, judging by your pic you weigh about 115-120 depending on how tall you are. And those are some damn good numbers you're putting up.

I'm impressed. 8)

About 80kg on a fat day actually... I'm 5'8"

omg sportsgirl is that you in the blog photo thats some lat width and waist to be proud of there

I agree to soem extent that with the deadlift its grip and rip. But my twin brother used that technique with out much guidance. in the space of about 9 months from when he started deadlifitng he could deadlift 250kg! Not bad for a 80kg 19 year old. That was in 2008. Now in 2010 as a result of that deadlifting technique or lack there of, he has a cuple of bulged discs and is lucky to go thru a training cycle with out re injuring another part of his body becasue of it. He is now forced to deadlift sumo as a result of this and is lucky to get 230-240 with a suit.

Squat and bench are lifts we look at over a fine tooth comb and these lifts are safer in regards to forces acting on the spine then the deadlift is. Some times i think we can let our ego get a head of our brain when deadlifting.

The grip and rip mentality is fine but only if a pinch of common sense in regards to both performance and saftey is adheared to :D

I hear you barbrother I have had most of my guidance and technique handed to me from our resident weightlifter and he has advocated technique to me quite a lot and quite in depth Im not one to judge how the others are doing it but seems there is a lot of back involved in some of this rip and grip technique rather than legs, glutes then back but Im only newish we will see how the next year or so progresses!!!!

TT, speed is such an important factor with powerlifting. If you ever get the chance, watching weightlifters do there thing on youtube doesnt even compare to when you see them doing it in the flesh. Im always amazed at how fast they move that bar and position themselves under the bar...its simply (IMHO) art!

If you want to work on developing more speed while maintaining technique, do sub maximal speed deadlifts. A good percentage to work with is:

Deadlifts - 60% of raw 1RM we normally do 15 singles with a 15-20sec rest between singles. If you are looking to fit these into your workouts, do them on your deadlift day or after your heavy squats.

For the other lifts if you are looking to incorperate speed, the bench we normally work with 40-45% of 1RM at 3reps x 8-10sets resting 45sec between sets. For the squats, 60% of the 1RM at 2reps x 10sets resting 45sec between sets. FLick me a PM bro if you want some more info.

Stay strong TT

Grip and rip isn't suitable for everyone. If you're slow off the floor, sure. But if you're like me and you struggle with lockout I find it can be better to be patient getting it off the floor and focusing on keeping your back in a good position so you can push your hips through and lock the weight out easier.

grip and rip  dont think twice

It's more than that, but if you ever watch a PL dead, he walks to the bar, immediately sets his foot placement, bends over and sets hands and squats down and pulls, he doesn't over think the process, he doesn't "fiddle" with were his feet go or his hands, he gets his set and explodes.

Not too complicated, really.

To guy that called me a troll, I wouldn't be considered a troll by someone that was as sensitive as you, from now on I'll burp you before I put you to bed.

Do tell more NZMM, is he a PLer or a DLing BBer?

Lets just say, he's pretty handy with 850lb tyres......

Nice, although tyres aren't my best friend after the bicep/suppinator injury!

Would be good to see more of him on such topics.

Back to Deadlift Speed!

I thought I'd add IMHO DE Deads aren't that flash. Nickoli & I replaced these with RM DL's alternated with ME DL's with better results.

What does RM mean? Repeated M....? Rep Max?

Sorry Nicko -

RM / Rep Method (basically reps & sets)

ME / Max effort (basically 1 top set all out for 1-5 reps)

DE / Dynamic effort (basically 8-10 sets of 1 rep @ 70ish% of 1RM for Deads, reps & % vary for Sq / BP)

Ah, cheers, the program I was following used RE instead meaning repeated effort (DE/ME were the same). Maybe they just like to end things with an E.

Also I haven't seen anyone mention using bands to increase speed or dling off a box........do you guys have that stuff on the wrong side of the equator?

Good post chaos. Dont know many people who have the platform for setting bands up to pull against them off the floor but a few guys use the reverse band although I always thought that was more of a lockout exercise. few of us use deficits, although im inclined to say that the best way to increase speed is just get fuckin stronger 8)
