Rachelle Chase on TV - Raw Food Diet

Did anyone else see this?

For those that don't know, Rachelle did very well last year in her first pro show (after a debacle surrounding her pro card issue) and not surprisingly she intends doing another pro show soon. Nothing unusual there.

The interesting thing was she's decided she's had enough of the traditional BBing diet (and living on artificial sweeteners!) and is going down the raw foods pathway. She has hired a "Raw Food Chef" to take care of her diet, and the chef was interviewed as well.

I was half paying attention to the interview but when they announced she'd be going almost vegan I started to listen. Her "Raw Food Chef" then made the statement of all statements when asked by the reporter how Rachelle would get enough protein to support her training (4 hours per day as stated by Rachelle???). The chef said "Green leafy vegetables have more protein than meat"

WOW!! Hang on a minute!!! Did someone change everything I know about nutrition overnight or what?? :pfft:

I don't wanna knock Rachelle, like every NZL athlete competing internationally I hope she does well, but to put your nutrition in the hands of someone making statements like that?! Makes you wonder.

Maybe Chris or Rachelle want to shed some more light on the theory here? It could've been lost in translation (I couldn't help detecting a thick russian accent on the raw food chef, maybe she misinterpreted the question?).

I did see that. And even though I am only new and still learning it did seem to go against the grain of what I have been taught. Especially the '4 hours training a day', and the 'veggies have more protein' comments. It will be interesting to see how she goes in her next comp. She may well revolutionise the industry as she hopes to.

it wasnt lost in translation nate,

i think the rusky was alluding to the theory ive seen being expressed on youtube by some beanpole - that the denaturing of protein when cooked negates the benefit of eating meat, and that the aminos present in veges that havent been denatured (cooked) are more usable/bioavailable than meat protein.

someone better tell jay cutler to stop with the chicken and eat some lettuce

although, kai green heavily endorses grapefruit, so who knows.....

The 4 hours a day seems like a bit of a "For TV" comment, up there with BigKiwi's $1000 / week grocery bill statement in the ChopChop interview! (Just teasing big guy!). I know I've said some things on TV / Radio interviews and thought about it later & realised I've talked it up a little! I'm sure Rachelle could clarify what that meant - maybe pre-comp with Cardio/Weights/Posing etc.

and the 'veggies have more protein' comments.

This is just plain wrong!

Maybe so, although I struggle to see Jay Cutler eating 40 kilograms of leafy greens a day before winning the O!!

Issues of amounts aside, plants offer a pretty limited selection of amino acids compared to animal sources.

Agreed.

You can build muscle on a plant based diet. It just takes a great deal of research and work.

Also agreed.

However that doesn't change the statement that green leafy veges have more protein than meat! In a sport where nutrition is an integral part of the game, you'd expect someone in charge of an athletes nutrition (at pro level no less!) to at least know the basics!

I'd agree with the paleo diet but this!

Agreed Paleo yes! ....but I can see now, the next wave of idots coming through the gym doors thinking they can be the next Rachelle and carry this off...

Granted it looked like she had quite a limited range of eating and so probably missing some essential nutrients BUT I would hardly subscribe to V, sugar free chewing gym (possible aspartamine issues depending how much she has?!) or pepsi max being part of any bodybuilding diet in any case, as the reporter seemed to imply....more likely that stuff was making her feel like crap....

Yes, I am really surprised at what she stated she ate. But maybe it was to make for better television? Showing the extreme side? Still, it skews general perception of the sport though a.

Don't get me wrong though. I would love to have a body like hers. I am just surprised at the whole interview.

So, she felt bloated, changed her diet, felt better... but what caused the change?

There's a legal term (at least I think there is) "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" - which means "after it, therefore because of it".

Comparing her previous diet with the current vegetarian/ vegan diet, so many things changed that it's only the Czech nutritionist's word "it was the veggies"...and not the cutting out the artificial sweeteners and carbonated drinks... she talked about sleeping better, for example...what caused that?

Is raw beef part of a "raw" diet ? If not, why not: discuss

It would be interesting to see how her body comp changes over the runup to the comp, and for her to compare how easy her contest prep goes compared with before.

Regardless, I hope she does do well in the 'states.

I'll be following with interest.

Veges do have a small amount of protein in them so Raechelle will get enough; and as mentioned Egg Whites are also part of the plan.

I dont think its too different to a BB diet already (lots of vege), but I was disappointed to see that Raechelles past vege intake wasnt shown on the 'before diet' benchtop, as she was eating them.

The quote of 'veges have more protein than meat' was waaaay wrong as we all know.

100g chicken breast = 31.2g protein, 100g rump steak = 27.3, 100g snapper 25.2g protein. vs. 100g broccoli 4.4g protein, 100g cucumber (was in the segment) 0.6g protein, 100g green beans 0.9g protein. (source The NZ Food Composition Table).

You can see why Raechelle is going through so much vege.

Good luck Raechelle; hopefully Campbell will do a follow up on the show once you've competed. :D

It's one of the Skeptics Guide to the Universe's top 20 logical fallicies http://www.theskepticsguide.org/resourc ... acies.aspx

For those who don't know, these are a bunch of people who spend a hell of a lot of time searching for the 'truth' about stuff, in particular medicine and science, and debunking lots of the silly theories and opinions that are out there. They're particularly harsh on the anti-vaccination brigade. Dr Steven Novella has a blog on science based medicine which is very interesting for helping those of us who don't have access to medical journals to unpack what they are saying, and what the actual evidence is for all the bites that we see in magazines saying 'eating this will cause that' etc.

Regardless, I hope she does do well in the 'states.

Echo this - looking gorgeous on tv!

This is why you always hear me complaining about people not thinking, and that knowing how to process information is more important than the information itself.

If you can't think critically, than just about anything can be true.

A couple of things sprang to mind during that interview, firstly she is only 10 days into this totally new eating plan, why the hell would you want to have it televised so early in the piece. Yes she probably has lost weight, after all she is drinking a shit load of veg/fluid and probably flushing a fair amount out at this early stage. Like what has been said before, the coke zero, gum and sugar free V alone would cause huge stress to her body so no wonder she was feeling like shit and struggling to sleep. Unfortunately my opinion of her hasn't changed much at this stage. But im optimistic and eagerly waiting to see how she looks for her overseas comp.
