did/does your nutritionist make a difference

Im going in to see a nutritionist tomorrow, I'm hoping it'll make a mega difference with fat loss goals at the moment

whats ur opinion on using nutritionists and if you do use their services was it worth it?

Having a wife who's a Dietitian & Sports Nutritionist my answer was always going to be biased!

However if you are seeing a decent nutritionist that knows their stuff you will definately benefit (just beware 'nutritionist' is a loose term - anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, some are great, some should be shot!).

PS - if its for a specific sport it would pay to get a nutritionist familiar with that sport, even better if they have done than sport. Plenty out there that have done BBing / Figure etc

Yeh make sure your nutritionist has experience with sports nutrition. Ive been to a couple. One when I was younger and really underweight and one more recently to help balance my energy levels. The one I saw recently was no help at all and told me I eat too much protein and not enough carbs and stuff. The diet she gave me was so standard like for any average person and not based around any of the goals I explained to her. Waste of money

Yeh make sure your nutritionist has experience with sports nutrition.

You need to be more specific than this particularly as you move up the levels. Sports nutrition is generic.

At Elite level there will only be a handful of people in each sport that have an indepth knowledge of that sports nutritional requirements & supplementation practices. Interestingly Rugby has made some fairly big changes in tact over the last while, likewise I'm sure other sports have.

SESNZ or one of the Academy of Sports (structures changed a while back) will have lists of Sports Nutrition providers and the areas in which they speciallise.

Ask yourself the question, if you were doing an Ultra Endurance event across Alaska would you ask someone that knew about BBing nutrition to help you?

Although its probably not a life or death situation as the above could be I wouldn't pay for BBing diet advice from a nutritionist not extremely well versed in the sport.

I've personally never used a nutritionist (Free advice from mates studying it and my own research tends to suffice) But they should definitely be able to set you up with a healthy plan that you can stick to. Don't be afraid to say no to something they suggest if it's a food you really dislike, there are alternatives for most things which you may prefer, the key is being consistent and sticking with a diet, which is a lot easier if it doesn't consist of foods you hate :pfft: Consistency really is the key with diet, especially if you're paying for a nutritionist, it'd just be a waste of money to not follow the plan for a while at least to see how your body reacts to it.

Best of luck and hope it helps! :D

I'd echo what the others are saying about ensuring you're seeing someone who is well versed in bb nutrition.

Although I'm not a competitor nor have I been to a nutritionist, I was at dinner the other night with work and a colleague's nutritionist partner was sitting opposite me. Another colleague was asking me about my current eating plan (calories slightly below maintenance, approx 20% carbs and 40% each good fats and protein) and I could see that the nutritionist was dying to say something about the appallingness of my diet, but felt rude due to having just met me that night and being a guest at our dinner (well, that's what I think anyway, by the confused look on her face!).

She's new to being a nutritionist, so I presume she has a fairly generic background - nutrition for normal people. Not saying I'm special or anything(particularly since I don't compete), nor that I actually have much of a clue (having got all my information off the webternet), and she's studied nutrition to degree level - but she was clearly shocked by my eating and my rationale for it, which is fairly standard from what I've seen, especially given that I got my proportions (20/40/40) from others on this site who have had results that way.

I guess it just pays to not assume that just because someone is a qualified nutritionist that they have a full knowledge of all the dietary requirements of all the sports (I'm assuming that any old person can't just go around calling themselves one, as another friend of mine spent 3 years at uni doing a BSc majoring in nutrition so that she could call herself one). If they do have a sound experience in bb nutrition, then I reckon it's probably money well spent.

:ditto: What they said

I did the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge a few years back, and needed specific advice on diet for the build-up for that, and on race-day food - the advice I got was good, and worked.

The same (trained) person's ideas when I started training the way I do now, simply didn't work.

I'll second this. Someone who understands what your goals are and has experience in that area is well worth taking on board.

Hey Vongi - how did it go? Hope you found the right person and found them helpful.

Yeah, I went and saw a nutritionist, she has experience with bb, the programme i've gotten is realistic, supprised she let me have a small bit of carbs during my evening meal.

I thought it was strictly no carbs after 3pm but she took into account lifestyle etc

I like the idea of having a nutritionist, having someone to report to since I don't have a huge lot of support around when it comes to nutrition side of things.

only 2 days so far but will post up results after a while in my journal
