Hey, I'm new to this and not really sure how to work it.

I've recently become quite interested in body sculpting and have started turning my life around to be more healthy! I've researched just on the internet about what is healthy etc and my daily meals are something like this...

7.30am- 5 x egg white, 1/4 cup oats, 1/2 banana

10.30am- 10 almonds, apple

12.15pm- 150g tuna with salad greens, tomato, mushroom, cucumber

2.30pm- 4 x vita wheat crackers with peanut butter/cottage cheese

4.30pm- 3 scoops Whey protein shake, 250ml low fat milk,1/2 banana

6.30pm- Chicken breast with green veges, 1/2 cup pf pumpkin

I exercise about 3 times a week, tredmill for half an hour, some light weights. I'm not looking to bulk up, just want to lose fat and be fit. Thanks so much for your advice, I'm so impressed ith what everyone on here is doing and achieving, it's quite amazing!

Hi FitnessGirl.

Looks like you've got a pretty clean diet. I wonder if you're eating enough - some of the meals seem pretty light, and you don't seem to be getting much fat or carbs. But I'm not so familiar with women's diets, so hopefully one of our ladies can help you out.

Now, as for these "light weights" you're doing... I suggest you swap them for heavy ones. They'll be much more effective. I know you don't want to bulk up, but trust me - you won't get big accidentally. If only it was that easy! :D

Thanks so much for your help! :) Yeah, I've heard woman don't bulk too easily, so I'll take your advice and opt for heavier weights.

I was also just wondering does anyone know information on the salmon/tuna debate? I've heard salmon is high in fat, so tuna is the desired option?? Thanks guys!

Oh I've been on this diet for about 2-3 weeks now. I've lost almost 2 kilos.

 So true - I've been lifting as heavy as I can for about 18 months now and still not getting much bigger - but definitely a lot more defined and am overall pleased with the result, so don't fear the big weights, you won't turn into Arnold overnight :pfft:

either salmon or tuna is all good, if i have tuna for lunch with a salad i would add some good fats too my salad Ie. Avacado. If i was going to have salmon i wouldn't worry about adding anything extra... you ain't going to put weight on eating a salmon salad for lunch 8)

If you have only been on the diet for 2 - 3 weeks stick at it for atleast that much longer so you can really start to see a change in your body composition.

HARD AND HEAVY ALL THE WAY.

Thanks heaps. I wish I knew this site existed a long time ago.. you guys are so much more helpful than overseas websites etc!! NZ really does have the nicest people who are genuinely willing to help others live a healthy lifestyle. I'm loving learning so much about how different foods affect the body.

Also, do you think eating carbs at every meal is bad? Or I suppose it just depends on the amount you have..

depends on a couple of things. general rule of thumb is if you ain't going to use them today then don't eat them.

so unless you are planning on running a marathon after dinner don't have any then.

The earlier you cut them out in the day the leaner you will get as long as you are still eating regulary protein / fat / fibre. So if you can handle it have some for breakfast and morning tea and then forget about them for the rest of the day.

If you are training after work then it probably isn't so bad to have a little at lunch as well. Alot of things you read say to avoid them from 3pm onward.. I personally find that getting them in first thing in the morning and not adding them to any other meals for the day best for me. Can make you a lil grumpy but then thats nothing that a strong black coffee doesn't fix.

AH BLACK COFFEE- Yum, I think I may go make a coffee now  Oh ok. That all makes sense. What is your view on protein shakes and bars? I've tried Horley's brand, they're really nice. But just wondering if they're doing any harm? Can you ever have too much protein which will therefore turn to fat?

Yup they are all good to use, specially if you can't get a meal in (on your way to the gym or straight afterward), i would stick to the shakes rather than the bars. Depending on what bars you get they can have alot of sugar in them and it is pretty hard to find one that doesn't (usually end up quite a bit more expensive if you stop to work it out). Horleys is all good, if you are trying to lose body fat then you would want to be taking either the horleys ice or the horleys ripped factors.. there are some cheaper stuff out there but for the quantity that you would consume the horleys probably ain't going to work out to expensive. Yup if you consume to much protein it does do exactly the same thing as excess carb or excess fats and end up being stored as fat. How ever eating a couple of steaks for dinner is far less likely to end up stored as fat than for arguments sake say a can of coke is. From my understanding of it your body finds it alot easier to convert excess carbs to fat than excess protein.
