Weighted Vests

I use a weighted vest for a lot of explosive movements when I'm feeling particularly sadistic. They are excellent as well when used for push/pulling exercises. I love using mine for pull ups especially. Great for upper back strength.

Apologies if this is a repeat thread but can someone tell me their thoughts on weighted vests and whether they are helpful or a hinderance?!?!?

In regards to what bro? what are you trying to do?

Trying to build speed and power. I heard they were useful for increasing speed and building explosive power...but that was from only one guy.

Hey I only found one place that sells them in NZ :

http://www.fitnessonline.co.nz/afawcs01 ... tails.html

Is there any other place that sells heavy vests in NZ EG: 40 lbs or more ?

There is a company in avondale called Syntech that sells steel shot at $70 for 25 kg.

I may just get some quality military chest webbing from the army surplus store on K-rd.

I wanted to get one from weightvest.com in the USA but they wont ship without the weight so you are looking at over nz$1400 for the 150 lb vest with shipping included.

Better to get a cheap vest here and buy a military chest rig when you want more weight.

Last time I looked, Getstrength also sell them (along with other equipment of the power/explosiveness sort). They're based in Auckland.

As to the OP, I believe they'll help, have been looking at getting one myself for a while now... just never got around to it. So will be interested to hear how you get on if you go for it

They are selling the same cheapo chinese vests - the problem with these is the weight is on the abdomen not the chest.

If I buy one I will have extra pockets sewn on the upper chest & back.

I see they have some great grip gear & other stuff.

PS: http://www.kiwidisposals.co.nz/ have top of the line military chest rigs for around $250

This gear could take over 100 lbs and take the knocks better than a vest.

Only you will look like RAMBO.

Update: weightvest.com has an internationsl store

http://www.myiglobal.com/weightvest/

I can get a 150 lb vest for nz $600 including shipping with 7 day delivery

Thats good value so I'm gunna get one in a week or two.

I ended up getting the 18 kg vest from getstrength.com over in onehunga.

This is one of my all time favorite pieces of gear & as a consequence I am now getting into kettlebell training too.

Combining the two is a totally killer session.

Also I look like I have lost heaps of weight but have gained 2 kg so my body composition is improving - its great.

I use a 10kg weight vest when doing cadio such as sledgehammer training and rope whipping and it really starts to weigh you down after a while.

Apart from amazing muscle intregrity it also promotes mental toughness.

Try going for a long run in one. It takes a lot of mental strength to carry on.

Great thing to own and use.

I used to be in the Army reserve Infantry at arch hill.

Was watching the doco on NZSAS selection. Those guys do selection with an 80 lb pack & webbing.

Plus rifle. When they do part of selection they have one or two 44 lb water jerry cans to lug also.

So thats up to 170 lbs through swamps and gorse bushes for 24 hours. Plus a whole week without sleep or food lugging 80 lbs and taking it on and off all day.

Lovely job.
