When is a calorie not a calorie?

Elite you are saying that hormones, genetics, stress, lack of sleep and medications all have an affect on weight. What you are failing to recognise is that they affect weight by disrupting the equilibrium of energy in vs energy out. Some stimulate appetite which results in consuming more calories and therefore more than is being expended. Some make the body more energy conservative/efficient so the intake of calories may not change but the energy expended by the body decreases. Similarly these factors can increase energy expenditure and decrease appetite. Resulting in weight loss.

You have not and can not disprove the laws of physics.

All right guys its not easy saying this because I believe what I believe in very passionately. I can see big holes in my way of thinking, and have perhaps been arrogant in my tone on here. Some of the questions fired at me I'm struggling a bit with.....so no hiding I admit I need to rethink my current position on all of this...my passion has got in the way of some critical thinking and I need to apologize.

Wow! Unleashed a monster here!

As much as I agree with PMan, from a practical POV it makes little difference. If Elite wants to remove food groups (due to his beliefs stated earlier in the thread) and he remains lean & gains mass, does it really matter that he believes his results are due to hormonal response, whilst PMan, myself & others would suggest its a function of calories in / out and a balance of macros.

I personally remained convinced low carb, hormone / metabolic based diets and most other 'fad diets' haven't got the long term health of people in mind (as a balanced calorie controlled diet have been shown to have through epidemiological studies).

Practitioners of the above mentioned diets seem to have beliefs stemming from 'bits & pieces' of studies contorted to suit their beliefs. However, that said, BBing / Sports specific training isn't really related to long term health, so I'm really enjoying this thread, and am keeping an open mind.

BUT A CALORIE IS STILL A CALORIE!

Solid. It's all about learning, man. There's a lot of outlandish claims out there but the basics don't go away, whether that means a barbell or fundamental physical laws

OK guys still very confused over here as what to do....

should i

a. Eat calories

b. Eat food

c. Inject myself with hormones

d. All of the above

:pfft:

Great discussion i feel i have learn't alot from reading it all... Also respect Elite121 for recognising that your thoughts were flawed because i was unsure of where my own thoughts were going with this one but i now feel that i have taken valuable information away from both sides of the argument that i can use in assessing my own results in the future.. And i guess different reasons to look at if my results aren't quite as straight forward as the calories in vs calories out method.

So your approach to things is much like that of Eric Talmant?

I'll never be sold on his way of thinking either but Eric is a great lifter & PLing administrator (Raw Unity Meet organiser) so I'm sure your similar approach can work for you in getting a bigger squat / deadlift.

Appreciate the response Elite.

Nate

Appreciate the link Nate....unfortunately The Metabolic Typing taught by Wolcott is the Readers Digest version and not the original works of D.R Kelly the pioneer of MT.All the same thanks for bringing the link to my attention.
