Upside down back raise?

Quick question-

What would you call an exercise where you lie flat on a bench with your back suspended in the air, arch backwards to touch the floor with your head then crunch up to a sitting position?

Like a hyperextension upside down (face-up) if you can imagine that.

Only reason I ask is I would like to know if it is an exercise and how to do it properly. I did it today by accident- thought I was trying out hyperextensions until I did a google form check just now and realised I was upside down

A situp

A fuckup. :P

It sounds painful. I'm pretty sure my back's not flexible enough to get my head anywhere near the floor, so kudos to you if you managed it. I'm all for experimentation though - just give it a fancy name ("reverse hyperextensions"?) and pretend that's what you intended to do all along.

Sounds like a lower back injury in the making.

If he's actually talking about reverse hypers its more like a lower back recovery in the making!

If you've never come across these Canty it would be well worth reading some Louie Simmons/Westside Barbell/EliteFTS stuff on Reverse Hypers. Keeps my back in reasonable shape after some pretty thorough abuse over the years!

I don't know what I'm talking about nate that was the point of the post :pfft:

Was just curious if 1) such a thing exists and 2) if it would root my back...

Consensus seems to be No, and Yes.

Yes I know the exercise, however ive seen it go horribly wrong and I would only recommend people do it initially under supervision by an experienced gym goer, it requires a strong core and control of the range of movement.

LOL - now I'm confused Rimma! :?

Rev Hypers are great rehab / prehab for lower backs. Nickoli & I used these a lot in the past and they're a staple down at Powerhouse Gym (who actually have a real deal Reverse Hyper machine).

Ahh I was meaning something else, not reverse hypers. Face up, legs/hips on the bench, upper body in the air arching the back down to the ground.

Doesn't matter anyway- as Pman so succintly explained, it's a sit-up. and probably a shit one too!

Got it! Sounds like a painful situp to me!
