True Stories: The World's Heaviest Man

Tonight, 9.40pm on Prime.

World's Heaviest Man tells the story of 1,225lb (85.5 stone or 555 kgs) Manuel Uribe of Monterrey, Mexico and his battle to lose weight and save his own life.

Following years of over-eating and an unhealthy lifestyle, Manuel Uribe has been confined to his bed for the past 5 years. After a television plea for help in January 2006, Manuel was inundated with offers from surgeons, doctors and dieticians from around the world.

After considering the options, Manuel decided on a particular weight loss method, and we follow his life as he loses weight over several months. If Manuel succeeds in getting down to his optimum weight of 220 lbs (15.5 stone or 100 kg) he may just rewrite medical history.

This film documents a year in Manuel's life, meets his family and friends and looks at what it is like to be the heaviest man in the world.

Manuel chose a diet over gastric bypass surgery, and according to Wikipedia, "by October 26, 2008, Uribe had reduced his weight to 360 kg (790 lb)."

It is cruel for people to get like that, no way people can get that big by themselves, they usually encouraged indirectly by there family. In this case, his mother.

Exactly. The guy was bedridden for 5 years. Who the hell was trucking in the food for him in that time?

It's great he did it with diet. I get tired of hearing about morbidly obese people who "tried everything else" and had to resort to surgery.

Didn't they say he was eating normally and it was just his hormones that were messed up? The diet he took was meant to fix the hormone imbalance. The fact it worked makes me interested in the diet. Would like to know how to generate more test naturally.

He got that way from eating crap. The specific diet suggests by balancing hormonal imperfections you can aid in weight loss.

Losing BF will have an impact on hormones regardless of the food types chosen.

From memory estrogen metabolism is impacted on by an enzyme found in bodyfat (can't remember details - PMan might know this one?).

Again from memory I recall higher BF content equated to higher estrogen levels.

I meant normal quantity rather than type. I think alot of BBers would eat more than him they just eat different types of food and exercise...

When I heard his mum saying she had no choice but to keep feeding him, I thought, "Rubbish." She said that you couldn't control an adult. Er, yes you can - particularly when they're totally bed-ridden! So he got upset if Mum didn't cook him extra eggs - so what? What was he going to do? Wobble angrily at her?!

(And speaking of wobbling, that tumour they cut off him as they wheeled it away... :puke:)

Anyway, it sounds like his new goal is to have the world record for losing the most weight. Good on him. I hope he does. I'll be watching Part 2 next week.

The above probably referred to more calories, rather than quantity. You'd be amazed at how much food (physically, size & weight wise) one can eat while still being in energy deficit and losing weight - especially when exercising.

Think you are thinking of Leptin which is a circulatory gene found in fat cells that switches on & off appetite & metabolism at the pituitary or the hypothalamus (cant remember which one). There is some correlation to fat cells & estrogen production as seen in obese males. There is also a mutation of the leptin gene that fails to switch it off & causes obesity. I recall that in BBer circles there has been some research or is it a method or controlling the gene by some extremists. Not sure how it goes now but sure you could google it if interested
