Banned Substances in Supplements

I just read today that one of Geoff Capes (former WSM & British Shotputter) athletes was banned for using Methylhexanamine. Didn't mean much to me so I googled and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylhexanamine

I'd suggest anyone on WADA testing check their pre-workout supplements to be safe as some products (not many but a few) have this compound in labelled as Geranamine, Geranium Oil/extract, DMAA or dimethylamylamine.

Of interest this was implicated in the Jamican doping scandal last year & it took the powers that be a while to determine if it was actually a banned substance. It has since been decided it is similar to other stimulants therefore is banned in competition. Two unlucky Aussie PLers were also caught out by this in supplements before it was widely known this was a banned substance.

How much of a practical difference do stimulants actually make in competition? Sure, they make you "wired" but so does adrenaline, and surely you'd have enough of that in a competition? Could a stimulant really make you run that much faster or lift that much more?

Stimulants definately improve performance in strength events & sprinting. Unsure of the finer details (PMan?) but the whole 'fight or flight' (adrenaline) thing comes into play to a greater degree when using stimulants. Obviously as an event becomes longer in duration blood glucose issues and fatigue could be problems when using these compounds.

I'm not 100% but I also think stimulants increase reaction times, hence beneficial in sprinting. Whether more fibres are recruited (i.e. greater neural efficiency) I'm unsure.

I have heard of guys using epipens (adrenaline) in PLing events, although this seems like a disaster waiting to happen! (HR / BP increases above the level you already get competing doesn't sound like fun to me!). There are also a lot of rumours about PLing records in the 80's being set by athletes using cocaine prior to lifting - sounds feasible but again not something I'd be up for!

It was on the WADA banned list in 2009 & there was some comparison with meth but duly resolved as a similar banned substance called tuaminoheptane which is another amine more powerful as a vasoconstrictor than ephedrine . So yes as a competing PLer you would not want to be using fat burners & stimulants containing dimethylamylamine. Pity though because they are great CNS stims & FBurners :D

I'll qualify that by saying its only banned in competition - off season is okay as stimulants are not tested for. For more info check the WADA site.

What time frame before its all out of the system?
