Breathing Issues

Im wondering if anyone out there who competes regularly ever has any breathing issues when you "bulk" up so to speak. I have put on just shy of 20kgs from my stage weight in Oct last year and am now the heaviest I have ever been.

I'm not sure if its related but I have been suffering from shortness of breath/Asthma type symptons for the last couple of months.

Off for checks at the respiratory centre on Thursday but just wondering if anyone else has had issues like this?

Have you been doing any cardio? If you haven't, your aerobic fitness probably hasn't changed, or possibly decreased, but you've added 20kg to be carried around day to day. Your respiratory system possibly might not be able to keep up with the higher demand for oxygen your body now has due to this increase in weight, especially if most of it's muscle, the more muscle a person has, the more oxygen they need, and the more weight they're carrying, the more energy they use, which equals a greater oxygen consumption.

When is it that you get the shortness of breath?

Most of the time to be honest, I also get this horrendous cough that gets triggered by changes of temp (not very useful when I work both in and outdoors). Breathing doesn't affect me working out and I have started doing some cardio a month ago and again no real dramas with that.

When I lie down it even gets a bit wheezy. I may just be unlucky and developing adult asthma?

I tried to do a spiromatry (spelling?) test a few weeks ago but couldn't get a decent reading (throwing up didn't help) hence the proper hospital visit.

Thatwasslight: 5'6" and 84kg.

I don't think its you're respiratory system not being able to cope due to poor fitness then, possibly sounds like you've got an infection of some sort. Hope the doc can sort it out mate, best of luck. Also, 84kg at 5'6", that's pretty solid man, I'm 6'1" and 87kg.

I've got asthma and temp change is a huge trigger for me.

Get this too.

Hopefully it's just a temporary thing for you and not actually asthma. Good luck.

Hey Cantygirl,

Yeah I wondered that as we have just moved from Blenheim to Canterbury, but in saying that the house we bought used to belong to some english people who hated the cold, all double glazed and heat pumped to the max. Warmest driest place I have lived.

There might be something to "its called being fat" :)...have started a wee bit of cardio and already its improved heaps.

Cheers for the imput.

Will do the NABBA/WFF in May ChCh to start with. Don't mind the dieting over xmas thing really, normally working anyway :). WFF works out well for me, not being a mass monster (or tall) it gives me an extra 5kgs over NABBA for my athletic weight which is great.

Something to maybe consider. Im not really an asthmatic but do get asthmatic symptoms through allergies. Mainly cats get me tight lunged and wheezy. Maybe your new house has pet hair that you could be allergic to?

I think its more to do with your lungs. Not because your bigger
