Funny Stuff in the Gym

One thing that still puts lead in my pencil.. after lifting all these years.. is the routine observance of the human animal when in a co-ed gym environment.

I work out at Canty Uni.. so I see a multitude of hilarious acts.

The posturing, the heavy lifting with bad form (or no form), the "bad ass" gym walk to the water fountain.. :pfft:

So, this uni student is at the leg press.. Got some 7 plates per side on the thing.. One look and you'd say he's in desperate need of some steaks and eggs.. I mean, he appeared like no way was this gonna fly..

He lowers the cradle some 1-2 inches and pumps out some 8 strained reps. Being some years my junior, and I've lifted for more years than he's been on the planet, I'd figure I'd provide some kindly advice. He stares at me like I have no idea what I'm talking about, since I suggested he lower the weight to where he can do 8-10 deep reps with good form.

A female fitness/bodybuilding coach/instructor hops on..she's about his same age, but an obvious ironwoman.. she warms up with some 4 plates per side.. and works up to 8 plates per side, plus one in the center.. knees to chest... below the first pin.. for 10 kick-ass reps. I meander back to the dude who was now on the lat pulldown looking right at her cranking out these reps (he's now pulling like 40 kg on the pulldowns.. guess it's that go heavy, then light, then heavy depending on bodypart routine ) :pfft:

I look at her then at him and say, "now that's how it's done."

The look on his face? Priceless.

Deegee, I've watched it performed by the very best. I now consider myself an expert on the art.

1) Hold your elbows out as far as possible. This forces other inferior people to scurry out of your way.

2) Twist your torso, washing-machine style. Imagine you are squeezing through a doorway - with your wide shoulders, you'll obviously have to go through sideways.

3) Repeat with alternate sides for each step you take.

4) For extra authenticity, accentuate the twist by leaning over slightly. This is the mark of a true pro.

Lets face it, 19" arms and a 200kg bench press mean nothing unless you've got a decent water fountain swagger. I really must get some lessons, the way I walk to the fountain people don't even know I'm into bodybuilding... :pfft:

The bigger you are, the less of a swagger you'll have

I wonder if there's a correlation between swaggering and wearing a white "wife beater"?

It's a never ending wankathon.

Track pants + wife beater (to show off those 15 inch gunZ) + a nike wristband if you're feeling extra fashionable = seems to be the trend in commercial gyms.

Get with with the program Ash, all the kewl kidz are doing it.

You hit the nail on the head there...that's beyond a swagger, I don't know if there's a word for that.

Pressing 68kg for DB press is impressive though.

My all time favourites are the guys that feel like they have to scream out after every freakin rep, then throw their weights onto the floor when they're done

Oh yeah, theres also the genius that put on his weight belt to do a set of bicep curls

Yeah I see alot of funny stuff at my gym. Like this guy who was doing standing ez-bar bicep curls and swinging every single rep. You know what he does next huh? He adds on more weight and repeats!

Also this guy who puts on all the weight for the tricep pushdown, puts his whole whole body into it and makes the weights clank as they hit the bottom. And he also does this press on thesmith machine that has about a 3 inch ROM.

lets see, my favourite is the swagger, pretty much that is it that makes me smile, the other is the over big weights and the swing to get the range of motion. love those big bicep curls with a full body swing.

grunting,

dropping weights

and than a combination of all of the above for the ultimate impression

You guys are just jealous.

I credit the water fountain swagger exercise for my 12.75 inch guns and my 29 inch chest (lats flexed and chest fully inflated).

And i used to train at Les Mills.

You call that posing...I'll show you posing....come down to the sauna late on a Friday night...yeah I'll show you posing...you bring the scented oils etc etc

Seriously I used to train at Les Mills and yeah it was full of posers but it was an ok gym and while I am easy going it did used to get a little hairy on friday nights when processions of guys with erections would come out of the sauna. Ok fellas there are appropriate places for this sort of thing - your friggin bedroom...not and I repeat NOT my friggin gym.

well it ain't my gym anymore so enjoy.
