As a Club owner it's interesting to read this thread. God would I love to be able to charge some of the rates quoted. If I was the only game in town my prices no doubt would be higher, but thanks to the free market economy we all enjoy, prices are set on the basis of what the market will pay and this trickles all the way down.

My rent is set by what the market will pay (i.e. as much as the landlord can squeeze out of me without me leaving) in fact every cost I incur is set in this way. If you live in a town with only one Gym you will probably pay more than in a town with more than one Gym. If your Gym offers lots of services and quality equipment compared to the opposition you may well be prepared to pay more than the Gym down the road that has a pile of rocks in the corner. If on the other hand lifting rocks is your thing then you're on to a winner. The reality is different strokes for different folks. Plenty of people pay top dollar to join Les Mills because it's the place to be seen, or it's close and they don't care about the cost. Which opens the market for small operators to open no frills Clubs to cater to the minority (you lot). This is why your local takeaway can complete with McDonald's. There are more factors than this of course, but nobody goes into business thinking they will work 100 hours a week for minimum wage yet that is the reality for a lot of smaller owner operated Clubs. The big chains get massive economies of scale for advertising, equipment purchasing etc. The little Clubs have to make do with second hand gear (or worse cheap Chinese rubbish) replaced infrequently and charge accordingly.

I would imagine most of you are in paid employment and you can bet your bottom dollar your boss charges as much as he can in the marketplace he operates, which in turn puts money your pocket (unless he drives a Porsche...).

Not looking for any sympathy my Lotus is bought and paid for :) But just giving you an insight into the other side of the fence many may not be aware of.

Off topic, but you cannot imagine the temptation I had to put my foot down when I was lit up by this Cop in Colorado when moving back to NZ from Europe by way of a road trip across the States. To much Dukes of Hazzard as a youngster I guess.

I have a memberships option card in my hand for the Cityfitness group. Join for 3 years pay $17.90 p.wk, 2 years $18.90 p.wk and 1 year $21.90 p.wk. Also depending on when you join up, they may waiver the admin and joining fee otherwise the admin fee is $39 for all options and the joining fee is $59, $79 or $99.
