working out at night

does anyone else find that working out after dinner (say 7pm) prevents you from getting to sleep?

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for it, so if you're able to explain why that'd be much appreciated :)

I find the same thing dont know the medical reasons but for me its cos Im all focused and switched on when im at the gym.

might be different if I went for a run doesnt take too much brain power to run.

Might have something to do with endorphines?

Yup me too. Especially when i've got boxing in the evening. But I read somewhere that you should exercise at night becuase your body temp goes up when you do and when it drops down afterwards your body thinks its sleep time coz thats what happens when you sleep. That seems to only happen to me when I work out in the morning hmmmmmmmm...... :?

I think it's stress related. You don't do anything physically demanding all day then bam(and the dirt is gone), all of a sudden your bodies being forced to lift heavy objects. Your body thinks its trying to be crushed by something and wires your brain into stress mode to increase it's odds of survival. Then I guess it has a hard time relaxing?

No probs here - frequently train at night as I feel Im a little better nourished (having eaten all day) and I believe your testosterone is slightly higher?!

If Im not training for any longer than 3-4 days in a row (no matter what time of day) I generally dont sleep  :pfft:

nope, highest testosterone levels are at 9 am but yeah agree that training on a fullish stomach is a better feeling than training on an empty one

I train 7pm too but don't have many problems as I'm pretty thrashed from my sessions that I just get home eat, tv and sleep. Used to have those problems but they were fixed by hot bath/cold shower, shocking my body into a state of relaxation.

There is a theory behind your situation, Charles Poliquin wrote an article on it and said that elevating cortisol (by training) at night is not ideal and can disrupt sleep, most likely because it is a stress hormone which produces that feeling of alertness.

That must be why I have a hard on at 9am every day. Come on..........

Two reasons. First, the adrenaline boost you get from working out will keep you awake.

Also it can take for your core body temperature to cool down which will also make it hard to get to sleep.

It makes no difference to me, regarding sleep. But, I have more energy than in the am, so it works for me. I train about 8pm at night, sometimes later.

Also, there are no douchenozzles hanging around talking at that time, just empty racks and benches... no waiting for equipment. oh yeah, baby, oh yeah. 8)

Well it is a known fact that physical activity such as going to the gym will boost your energy levels and alertness. Perhaps related to the release in endorphins into your system? or possibly adrenaline levels?
