are tire flips good for rugby training?

They are indeed mate, very practical for Rugby training.

Use them in conjunction with other GPP-type exercises for a circuit type train, e.g. tyre drags, jumping in and out of tyres etc

I'm doing a bit of it myself for Rugby

im only in colts (u15) though- do you still think theyll be good.will the tires be to heavy or can you get medium sized tires?

 Colts are under 15? I thought Colts were U21... what area are you in? Maybe it just differs in other parts of the country :) (I've played U21 "Colts" in Wellington and Auckland)

How old are you?

Either way, age shouldn't stop you. Do a google search and look for proper tyre flipping technique (this is a good place to start), start light (obviously) and move up when you can.

Just don't go too heavy!

Tyre flips have always been known as high risk in Strongman (mainly biceps tendons but also calves) and as such have been pulled from a lot of comps. A massive 250 - 400kg tyre wont be much fun & in all honesty you wont benefit from teacing yourself to slowly flip tyres.

Go for a smaller tyre (less than 200kg, with smaller diameter) and aim to flip explosively. Do take Drizzt advice and learn to flip properly - it aint a deadlift! EliteFTS.com had a good article on tyre flipping as well.
