Home Gym Help

Maximus

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a bit of feedback here as I'm looking at building a functional home gym and would like some advice on where to get some items from and what you would suggest to add to it.

My budget for this will be about $4000 and I'm looking to have a matted area and the following equipment.

1. Oly bars and weights

2. Trapdoor Bars

3. Tractor Tyres

4. Kettlebells (I have several all ready)

5. Squat Rack

6. Chains (to attach to oly bars for squats, deadlifts etc)

7. Olympic rings and boxes.

8. Mats

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's what I'd do:

Tractor Tyres - FREE - see drizzt above

Squat Rack - Find a good tradesman, box section & pins, maybe $600 for a beast of a rack

Chains (to attach to oly bars for squats, deadlifts etc) - FREE - try a few workshops, mine came from a freezing works chain - or maybe buy at scrap metal prices?

Olympic rings and boxes. - Should make these at a few hundred bucks tops

Mats - FREE - use old conveyer belts

The remaining $3000 or so should get you a hell of a lot of Oly bars and weights, Trapdoor Bars (WTF - trap bar maybe? :? ), and Kettlebells.

For some ideas check out photos / vids of EliteFTS' gym, PowerHouse gym, Eastside Barbell and Coast Barbell.

  • 2 weeks later...

I know a great metalworker in Aucks, who would give you good prices on making a squat rack etc. Even be able to make detachable dip bars, or permanent chin bars added to it, etc

He's the man with steel boxing and tubes and a welder.

3. Tractor Tyres

These can be had for free. Ring around your local tyre stores and ask for any old ones that are set for disposal. You may just have to sort transport yourself :)

On this again - I take it from your Gyms Wellington topic that you are based in Wellington? I got my tyres from Beaurepaires in Kaiwharwhara (Old Hutt Rd). They have tonnes out the back, just give them a call and ask if it's cool to swing by with a trailer and pick a few up

They were going to deliver for me (they offered) but after about 5-6 weeks of chasing them around I just ended up sorting it myself.
