Hi There,

Nicknames Peewee, but most people shorten it to Pee,

Ok I Live on a island in the pacific with no gyms, am a computer programmer, only a few crappy clubs with cheap all in one units, so I got myself a set of dumbells 40 kgs of weights and a boxing bag.

Im 25, 195cm on my drivers licence, which is 6"5 ruffly, but I think I might be alittle shorter than that, 154kg atm, was about 165 last year and smoking, so have quit the smokes and lost 10 since then.

I tried the gym thing when I was about 18 and living in Aussie, But got some dork of a PT who thought it was cool I could leg press 350kg 3x8 the first time I ever stepped into a gym, which I thought was pretty cool at the time aswell, but the next day I couldnt bend my left leg as my knee felt like it had a series of knifes in the back of it. Anyway, got some horse sized pills from the doc and never went back.

What sparked my interest in weights again was most cardio makes me want to hang myself with the slow progress and sore knee, and I actually enjoy eating, good food not shit, but probably just to much of it, then I was watching WSM, and how much they eat during an interview, and thought I could do that!

Anyway, so far im doing boxing for a warmup/light cardio for 20-30 minutes a day, and weights 3 times a week, incline dumbell press, situps, bicep curl (i think), and some One Arm Row.

And also some sqauts with light dumbell weights just to get my knees working.

Question is what else can I do, any suggestion? Do I need a barbell and some serious weights? I tried bench press with dumbells but sorta hurts my shoulder bringing them down to the ground once finished, so stopped that.

Cheers,

Pee

Hey thanks for replying, wasnt sure if anyone would.

Yea im thinking loose some weight at gain strength and size, I assume to a certain extent that they will go hand in hand.

Ultimately I would like to focus on something like strongman or powerlifting although don't want to get ahead of myself to much.

I think I have punished my body to much to ever consider BB plus im not that pretty (is that a judging criteria? lol).

Cheers,

Pee

Welcome, Pee! :)

Prettiness certainly isn't a judging criteria, so not to worry ;) :pfft:

You sound like you've got a really good base to work off for whatever path of training you'd like to pursue :)

You'll probably find that you will outgrow the weights you have at the moment quite quickly. Unfortunately, owning a home gym can quite often be/become an expensive pursuit. In saying that, a pair of dumbbells can be used in a variety of different ways, so they should keep you going for a while if you know how to use 'em :) A barbell will certainly be a good addition to what you have, so I would look at getting one down the track if you are able to.

Heavy Bag is fantastic for conditioning sessions  Good, simple piece of equipment there.

What island are you on, out of curiousity?

I live in Port Vila, Vanuatu, Its not that bad really, apart from cheap organic beef there are alot of fresh fruit and veggies year round, and as the locals really can't afford pesticides or anything its all basically organic, I just hate the heat.

There isnt any physio that I know of (could be a french one), my knee injury doesnt really bother me much anymore, every now and again I will notice the twinge in the morning if I push it to hard. At the time the doctor only gave me anti-inflamatorys and pain killers, personally I don't take pain killers or even paracetamol, nothing to do with morals, just they make me feel buggered up and the pain is easier to deal with.

Although I do visit my old lady in Aussie every 6 months or so, so I will get it checked out next time im back there.

I was looking at a rack and weight set, I think it was about 2k new, 215kg's of oly weights, Im not trying to be cheap, but I at least want to know I will stick at it before outlaying that sort of cash (maybe just taking the step of joining here has convinced me more).

Cheers,

Pee

You're in luck then, because a lot of strongman gear can be improvised from junk. For instance, Drizzt has just got himself a collection of large tyres to play with.

I fully understand where you are coming from with this. My view ended up being if I shelled out a lot of money (i.e., payed my gym membership up front) I'd be more likely to stick to it. That doesn't work for eveyone tho and 2k is a lot to put on the line.

In saying that though 215kgs is a lot of weight. Would last you a long time before you'd need a top IMO.

Thanks,

Well im gonna get of my arse then and organise a good program and diet, and start working hard, which I knew I had to do anyway, was but reading this site has given me alot of advice, Glad I joined here and not some of the other fitness forums I have read, my theory was if you want to be competing with the best, learn from them.

As for the gym, I think ill hold off for a few months, but I have found a 3/4" solid round bar about 8 foot long, and about 200kgs of 20 ton chain, so am going to weld some D's on that and rig it up, sorta chain weight deadlift and squat bar.

Isnt any really big tyres here as its an island, and the locals would live in it if it was big enough, but I got about a 3 foot round truck tyre, and have got some cement setting in it at the moment.

Anyway thanks again, ill keep posting, I took a before photo so maybe start a journal in 6 months, atm it would just be a photo of a fat guy with some dream's so ill wait till i got some actually progress.

Cheers,

Pee

Awesome Pee, good to hear mate :)

I'd suggest chucking up a journal now, it's a good way of keeping motivated if it's on here for everybody to see  A journal will also allow others to chip in and offer advice on things you're doing if that appeals to you.

Same goes for pics - don't be scared! I did the same thing as yourself - took some starter pics which quietly kept me motivated, but didn't post them up until I had started losing weight. In hindsight, putting the pics up earlier would've helped IMHO - checking back and updating them with good progress is a real buzz, and I'm sure you'll get some great support from people on these forums :)

Up to you though but I would most definitely be interested in hearing how you get along :D With your size, age and goals, you could potentially shift some very big numbers after some good training 8)

Whichever way you choose, good luck!
