Hi everyone. My names Cliff and I’m starting to get back into training again.

I have played professional Rugby and League in the UK/Japan but after catching pneumonia in late 2008, it went to my heart which caused AF (Atrial Fibrillation)

I was sidelined for a year of absolute no activity and inevitably I put on weight…a lot of weight, 60 kgs to be precise, and at my heaviest was 175kg!!

Over the past year I had lots of ups and downs but in nov 09 was give the clearance to train again and have since lost 30kgs through swimming, gym work watching what I eat etc.

I have been thinking for a while about giving Body Building ago and thought I would join the forums to get weight loss and training tips etc from those who are there and have done it before.

Look forward to chat with you guys. :D

Welcome, Cliff! :)

Are you aiming to get back into the Rugby?

Thanks mate. No I think I’ve done my dash of footy, maybe club but not serious...I’m still very competitive though which is why I think I would like to give serious weight training a good nudge.

I should also mention I’m naturally pretty strong and even after a year off I was still benching 135kg leg pressing 370kg i'm doing a bit more now but have found myself in rugby training mode again. So tips of getting gains and loss (in my case) would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Cliff - welcome!

I never realised pneumonia could affect the heart. Is it likely to have caused permanent damage, or can you train back at 100% now?

It's really rare in people under 50 and it seems I lucked out lol. Pneumonia, Bronchitis and chest infections all have the possibility of causing AF.

They had to reset my heart by defibrillating it to stop, then 30 seconds restarting it. Obviously afterwards my heart was weak which is the reason I could do absolutely no activity for a year. During that year I was on various beta blockers and cardio medication though because of my age and I was fit, the likeliness of permanent damage was low and after various tests with a heart specialists I have been told i'm 100% again.

Trouble I have been finding is getting remotivated after a year playing Xbox and watching DVD’s...in saying that time for me to go too the gym lol

Hey Cliff, Welcome!

Let me know if there is anything I can help you with in regards to possible competing in the future, regardless of which federation you choose.

All the best for your journey mate!

Cheers
