Bulk-Food-Shops in Auckland?

Usually I get my food at the supermarket (Pak'n'Save), but lately I've been going through food like candy. This prompts me to wonder about shops that sell meat, chicken and fish in bulk. I think I know of one in Mt. Eden but I haven't been there in a while.

Regardless of the area (but it has to be in Auckland obviously) are there any such shops that you know of?

I usually just get my meat from Foodtown, because it's handy. But I wait until it's on special, then stock up the freezer. The special usually reduces the price to $9.99/kilo. How that that compare with other places?

Yeah that's the usual story.

Depending on the weight/shelf life of the meat, I'd more or less estimate 10$/kg on special, like you said. Can't say for sure because I don't have any meat in the freezer or I ate it already. But I'll check it next time for analy-inclined people.

Regarding chicken, I think it depends wheather you're a chicken boob or a whole chicken kinda person. I buy both. On special, whole chicken (Size 26) is about 9.0-9.99$. Chicken boobs are generally 14.99$/kg on the day packed, those are bone-less/skin-less. Price drops if they are with skin. (Because they think I'm a lazy bastard who can't peel the skin off and have to exert a massive amount of energy (2 kcals) doing so.) On special, you can generally get a reasonably big chicken boobs (~750 g net weight and up) for about 7.50-9$. Depends when you go and who gets there first.

Whats the word on other cuts of chicken.. thigh , legs etc. ? bad fats ?

Not really, I find that cooking chicken breasts takes less time than say cooking 12 chicken drumsticks or thighs.

I don't eat many thighs nowadays, unless I cook the whole chicken. Just breasts and drumsticks.

It's for the sake of convenience really, plus I don't solely rely on chicken as a source of protein.

Pork & Poultry on Margan Ave in New Lynn occasionally sell boneless chicken breasts (skin on) for $5.99 a kilo but they usually limit it to a maximum of 5kg (although I guess you could go back several days running if you really want to stock up). Their standard price is about $9.99 a kilo.

For red meat I usually go to the Aussie Butcher in Henderson. They sometimes sell unsliced aged sirloin (porterhouse) or eye fillet for around $15 a kilo in a big vaccuum pack. I usually buy a 2 kilo pack, take it home and cut it into 10 steaks. Their meat is really tender and has great flavour. I don't usually buy supermarket steak as I find it's too watery tasting, although the Pak n Save T-bones aren't bad.

Aussie Butcher is good, the Mad Butcher often (nearly weekly) does Boneless Chicken Breast for $7.99 kg, with no limit as to how many kg. For steak lovers, the Westmere Butcher often does eye fillet at 9.99kg. FYI, Westmere butcher also got a silver medal for their beef sausages at the recent prestigious NZ sausage awards. Not that we eat sausages!
