rofl, gotta love this whole "You're a pussy if you don't squat" bullshit. If you don't dead lift you won't have a good back too eh? lmfao.

I can't think of many substitutes than the deadlifts for lower back development, except some weighted hyper extension BS. I don't know, how do most bodybuilders develop there lower back and spinal erectors - enlighten me?

When you weigh 70kg and want to talk about what Dorian did to justify why you don't squat or deadlift, you know you're a little off the mark.

There are too many lazy people in the gym - trying to find an easy way out of training. If you want to look like "half a bodybuilder - do lunges and extensions. If you want to build some serious wheels - get under a bar and get into a squat rack!!

Hawks: Bro I actually started to front squat during my contest prep, but i had good (for me and my size) leg developement from walking lunges and leg presses.

TinyTraps:

Soaringswine: I'm sure the last time I talked to Nathan O'Hearn he said he always does single legged exercises, he loved lunges and said he only did squats and high reps at around 60kgs to get the definition in his legs. Though I need SG to back this up since they know each other well. Do you question him also?

Ann: Woahhhh Sorrryyyy!! Lmfao. What about Grant Pieterse's back developement for such a young guy who hates deadlifts?? And as I mentioned about Nathan O'Hearn? All I'm saying is, alot of people over hype them and call you a pussy if you don't do it but they most likely some people who do these exercises don't even have that of a great developement from them lol. Just following others like sheep. Op if you don't want to do squats, don't do them. Find something else that works great for you.

ThePMan: Sigh.. Why are you bringing weight into this?? How much do you weigh and what are your stats? Got a picture also? Have you seen Jim Cordova who weighs around 73-75kgs???

Laver: I just use weighted hyper extensions. Bro go for the deadlifts man. If it's working wonderfully for you, go for gold! But people go around saying you will never have a good over all back or spinal erecters without them?? Please..

this dicussion is about size not strength. there are plenty of other equally beneficial exercises to the deadlift/squat. hyperextensions for errectors, sldl/good morning for hams, lunges for glutes/adductors, leg press for quads. but the reality is squats and deadlifts allow you to overload(for STRENGTH) each and every muscle together safely. as you guys already are aware loochi is a bodybuilder not a powerlifter and hes giving the right advices to this guy.

times change...and so has bodybuilding. deadlift and squats arent part of a mandatory routine like they were in the 60's. if you guys wanna take a shit on someone take a shit on the ones here saying "if you dont squat your a pussy", who dont deadlift.

I'll drag my 115kg lazy arse down to the gym again.

Good - make sure that you have a bubble butt attached to those legs of yours.

Yes you are right - times do change. But a weight is a weight and squats are squats - they will never change - people's attitudes towards weight training does.

As for Dorian not squating when he was a pro he did hack squat , jay cutler does smith squats as for Nathan not squating he may not now but i bet with legs his size he has done in the past , most people dont squat because they are just so bloody hard , that is not to say other leg exersizes do not work either , as for bb changing well i beg to differ people change the weights dont , A bodybuilder once said dont try and rewrite the book stick to the basics that was Lee Haney 8 time mr olympia . well off to do legs oh yes and a few squats

just to please everybody else I'll do some!

God help me if I enjoy doing them!

Trying to stay away from the darkside

Want to compete before i start pulling trucks and lifting rocks etc

Am I happy with my leg development so far without squatting?

yes

Why because they are developing, every leg workout they are hammered

Then they are fed lots, rest well I'm working on this

Interestingly the pics shown so far of massive legs are from enhanced BB

they hardly compare to say an average? joe blow like the colourful character SFS as in steaks video

Firstly that wasn't a comment directed at anyone in particular. It was more to the effect that "X does Y, therefore Y is right" is a flawed argument.

What the top guys in any sport are doing has little relevance to what you or anyone else should do. They've got a variety of factors working in their favor, not the least of which being years of experience building a foundation of muscle, strength, and everything else, and having figured out what's effective for their current level of development.

The point about weight is relevant in the abstract, because if you've not put on the same relative amount of muscle as Dorian or any IFBB pro, then you've got no real business emulating their training.

Plenty of guys have gotten big from squatting, deadlifting, and the other basic lifts. I don't know very many that have gotten big by doing isolation exercises alone.

Note that this distinguishes from big guys that come into the gym already big - big joints, big frame, and good potential for building bulk. It also distinguishes guys that have been lifting 10-20 years and have built a foundation - they can do whatever they want if they feel it's effective. But that's the whole point: what the genetic elite do is not any particular concern for the regular folks.

This whole if you don't squat you won't get any developement is like saying if you don't go to uni and don't get a degree, you won't have a good job or good pay.. Which is not true! No matter what it is, if you work hard and have the thing you want on your mind and you are hungry for it, you will get it.

ThePMan:

How is leg pressing isolation? I'm still putting on size, granted I don't have big joints or a big frame, but I'm still making progress without pushing TOO heavy either. Some people don't train heavy, others do. Whatever works for you, works for you. Serge Nubret didn't train heavy and he was pretty well built, ya?

EDIT: I mention leg press ThePMan because basically most people think without squats, you're done for.

Did you not see my earlier post that if you're providing the right conditions for growth, you're going to grow regardless of what exercise you're doing?

I'm just elaborating on why people suggest the big compound movements - because they work, by making it very easy to create the right conditions for growth. They can be loaded very heavily and progressively over years, and they overload a lot of muscle at once.

Leg pressing won't "not work" just because it's not a squat. But at the same time, you're probably going to get better results - and have healthier joints over the long run - by investing the time in squatting. I know I can't leg press worth a damn due to crappy knees. Full front and back squats are fine, minus the occasional muscle tear

Actually he did. He stopped doing them due to feeling he grew better using the leg press.

Dorian Yates: "I didn't do any free weight squats as a professional bodybuilder, not one single squat and I won 6 Mr Olympias"

Don't mean to be a dick or anything.

Already noted but yea "as a professional body builder" okay, but before that he definitely tried them.

this dicussion is about size not strength.

What do you think causes increases in muscle size?

i love the statement 'strength is size' but hes not training for strength is he? of course you will progressively get stronger providing his muscle with resistance training, thats what happens you know pman.

pro bodybuilders are a testiment that you dont need to squat/deadlift to have big legs or a big back. there are heaps of powerlifters that look like twigs. if some noob came up to you and said do i need to be huge to have a big deadlift, squat or bench what would you say pman?

better yet pman, and for good old sakes lets make a direct comparison with pro bodybuilders.

if you compare levrone, wheeler, or any other IFBB pro with huge legs lets even be fair, with big LEG power that dont squat or deadlift. do you think they could squat or deadlift half the weight ronnie does?

wheelers legs were the same size and he never used heaps of poundages. even better do you know any powerlifter that can leg press 2500 pounds? wheres that translation in his squat?

size is strength. how many small guys do you see squatting 180+?

plenty its called weight classes

why is everyone arguing that you need to do squats and deadlifts to get big. get over it because you dont.

You really don't get what people are saying do you?

They aren't the only way to get big, but for the majority of people it will be the most effective way.

god dammit EMC, stop being such a bundy, man.

if you dont have a clue, why argue the point?

why not accept that others on here have more knowledge and experience on subjects which you are OBVIOUSLY lacking in.

After many years of being faithful to them, I realized that the relative lengths of my bodyparts restricted the range of motion for squats. When I switched to the leg press, I made much faster gains in quad size and sweep

Weight had nothing to do with his reasons for not squating. Being a long than normal frame I to had stopping squating many years ago for the same reasons. What the top guys/gals in any sport are doing has absoulte relevance to anyone embarking into a sport. Why would you want to re-invent the wheel. The differing factors would be commitment/talent/genetics/will to win/ abilty to manage risk .... all things not easily quantifiable but individually administered.

I know I'm repeating myself but you seem to be trying to lead the argument in circles, so answer that question for me.

You think pro bodybuilders don't squat or deadlift? Or never did at any point in their entire careers? Did you really just say that?

Do you want to have a discussion or do you just want to keep spouting off logical fallacies?
