Big legs WITHOUT squats?

Im sorry if this thread has been done already but im curious as to how many of you guys/gals have managed to build big legs without the use of heavy squats? Its always been the belief that you cant build big legs without doing them so im wondering if anyone has actually done this without them. Can you truly get massive quads not doing squats?

Muscle growth, at least the aspects of it that you can control, is entirely a matter of sufficient tension-time overload and nutritional support (i.e., protein and total calories).

If you can create that overload with the leg press, or anything else, then it's not like your legs just won't grow. Physiology doesn't stop working because of the exercise you picked.

Squats are often suggested because they're the most economical and productive exercise for most people's needs. That doesn't mean they're the only possible way to get the job done.

Its not that i dont like squats. They have been the foundation of my leg strength for a long time but i feel my glutes look to large and getting that booty look so i was thinking of switching it up . Curious as to any routines that could be recommended that have worked for others.

Currently my leg routine consists of

Squats = 5 sets of 5 reps

Leg press 3 sets 12-15 reps

Leg extension 4 sets of 10 reps superst with standing leg curls 4 sets of 10 reps. Stretching between all sets.

This has been what works for me so far ( apart from the Kim Kardashian booty)

craig titus never did squats and he had great legs..

lunges are good but they hit your glutes and hams so you probably wouldnt want to do them..

theres not many quad building exercises you can do that wont hit your glutes..

i cant think of one :o

Actually he did. He stopped doing them due to feeling he grew better using the leg press.

Dorian Yates: "I didn't do any free weight squats as a professional bodybuilder, not one single squat and I won 6 Mr Olympias"

Don't mean to be a dick or anything.

Key proviso bolded.

Sure, you might do okay leaving squat out. But unless you have a very good reason to, then you're a pussy.

Seconded....I can't find the ref but I recall reading that Dorian had stopped squatting before he turned pro.

However, unless you're Dorian, then squats are a very effective tool.

As far as booty-building's concerned, again I can't put my hands on the quote, but I'm fairly sure Ronnie Coleman swore that lunges were worse than squats at building glutes.

Bottom line - every lift has pros and cons. Try them all 'til you find out what gets the results you want.

dont get me wrong im humble of the squat but whats the big deal? no one deadlifts in the 21st century and the reality is the body is more familiar to the deadlift than any other exercise. its the only thing man has truely known to do since the begining of time, lifting a dead weight off the ground.

people need to worship the deadlift. \:D/

People need to worship hardwork!

There are too many lazy people in the gym - trying to find an easy way out of training. If you want to look like "half a bodybuilder - do lunges and extensions. If you want to build some serious wheels - get under a bar and get into a squat rack!! Unless you've got some fantastic genetics - there's no other way!

People should both squat and deadlift. They're equally important in my opinion.

rofl, gotta love this whole "You're a pussy if you don't squat" bullshit. If you don't dead lift you won't have a good back too eh? lmfao.

Sure, you can get a great back/legs other ways. But I question your worth as a person if you go to the gym and avoid the exercises that are the most challenging.

Bullshit is it? Tell that to Tom Platz, Ronnie Coleman, Lee Priest and every other man who has some serious leg and back development via squatting and deadlifting. Its called muscle maturity and density young lad. Maybe one day when you decide to use the muscles on the side of your head (people call them ears) - you may have that too.
