Stronglifts 5x5. Is it Right for me?

Hi All,

Started going to gym since early last year and been doing a 4 days split and got a little strong. But after reading lot about stronglifts 5x5 and people here preaching about how 5x5 is so good for beginners.

I couldnt resist anymore and wanted to stop wasting my time in the gym. Will be starting the below 5x5 from coming Monday as it is suggested on the website.

Workout A

Squat 5x5

Bench Press 5x5

Inverted Rows 3xF

Push-ups 3xF

Reverse Crunch 3x12

Workout B

Squat 5x5

Overhead Press 5x5

Deadlift 1x5

Pull-ups/Chin-ups 3xF

Prone Bridges 3x30sec

Im just a tiny 76kgs guy and will also be bulking up during this 5x5 program.

I have also read the FAQ's in the stronglifts section and they all say that just stick to the program and dont change anything.

But i just liked to confirm with you some experienced Guru's if this would be right for me.

Regarding my 2 major weaknesses. (apart from my whole body :) )

1. Issues with my left shoulder. (near the rear deltoid). Its a little niggle (also clicking - not pain) when i perform the front deltoid exercises.

2. Lower back - slightly weak and slightly painful.

For the issues above i have been previously doing - scapular stabilization exercises and it had helped quite a bit for my shoulders. Back extensions and deadlifts for my Lower back but hasnt helped a lot.

Questions

1. So i was just wondering if i need to change anything about the program for me?

2. Also can i alternate the Overhead Press with Behind the Neck Press every week. (For me it feels like I can target the rear delts and help the upper back more with this exercise). If that makes any sense.

3. And dont get my wrong. I LOVE squats but because of my lower back issue, is it good to swap 5x5 Deadlifts and 1x5 squats once a week mabye at the end of week. (probably gonna get smoked for this) :pfft: :pfft:

Any advice and suggestions would be great.

Thanks a lot.

I don't like the Stronglifts setup compared to the original Bill Starr workout or one of the more recent Pendlay/Rippetoe 5x5 versions.

Thanks for the advice Pman.

How about the my weaknesses? Do i still keep doing my scapular stabilization exercises?

Also do i stick the same program without any change say until i reach squat 1.5 x BW? Or when do i change or tweak anything? (just to have an idea for later)

Scap stabilization stuff fits easily into your warmup or cooldown. It shouldn't take any spectacular amount of work unless you've got a real injury or other structural problem in there - and if that's the case you need to be talking to a physio.

Milk it as long as you can milk it. The thing you have to remember about that particular program (the SS/Rip novice) is that it's designed to make you progress as fast as possible - intermediate and advanced versions are specifically put together to slow down gains so that a stronger person can keep making progress.

Thanks. So i will still keep doing the scapular exercises. The SS/Rip novice program seems pretty good and i would be in and out of the gym in 30min :)

Until the weights gets really heavy i guess.

Cant wait to start! 8) 8)
