Home brand tuna

sealord is dear but you know you're getting quality as opposed to the shit that home brand gives you. on the other hand though i've found that home brand sardines are easier to stomach than some of the expensive brands. but yeah it's better to stick to sealord for tuna and john west for salmon

I regularly have the homebrand sandwich tuna in brine. No way I could stomach the taste by itself, but if ya add plenty of chilli powder and grated sheese, then bung it in the nuking machine for 2min, it's tolerable. And a hell of a lot cheaper than Sealord. In fact I'm off to have one right now :D

Yeah I have to say the first time I tasted home brand I was lucky not to chuck up but still I have always been a sealord man and always will be, it was probably at the cheapest price I've ever seen- 5 85gm cans for $5 at pak n save..

The sealord lite in springwater is yellowfin so are you saying to avoid it or have it moderation Gymsta??

Cheers

it really depends how much tuna you're eating. yellowfin tend to have a lot more mercury in them than skipjack, so just as a precaution it's better to stick to skipjack if you can. if you're eating one or two cans per week its no big deal eating yellowfin, but if you're eating more than that then it's best to go for skipjack.

remember its more of a precaution than anything else, it's not like you're going to drop dead after you eat a can of yellowfin

if you want to read more just google mercury in tuna, there's heaps of shit out there :)

I just tried Woolworths' Signature Range flavoured tuna. It's unbelievably salty. The Tomato and Basil is almost inedible, and I've yet to find a piece of tomato in there.

yeah i've tried this too, probably worth avoiding. it amazes me how much the taste differs between brands- you'd think tuna is tuna, but they all have their own unique taste

I've just been reading up on Mercury in Tuna as I eat a s**t load of it. Not really sure what to think of it to be honest. I guess it's best to err on the side of caution though. By the way Sealord is made from either Skipjack OR Yellow-fin http://www.sealord.biz/faq.asp?id=147

Greenseas appears to be Skipjack only and is not bad, New World have been selling it for $1.99, not sure if that special is still going or not though.

There is also a table here which shows low and high risk fish, strange that there is no data available for Yellow-fin http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/chem ... /index.htm

I know it's meant for pregnant women only but if you are eating 1-2 cans a day you should probably take notice. Apparently canned Tuna is less than a year old so mercury levels are generally low. Must do wonders for the Tuna stocks though!

It's a shame because Tuna is probably the easiest way to get protein, apart from a shake of course.
