There's no way the tax covers the costs of the effects of smoking, immediate or future.

Correction:

Studies/Reports have confirmed that the tax on smoking is over twice the cost of smoking related healthcare in New Zealand.

I work as an underwriter in the health and life insurance industry and although I agree smoking is detrimental to the bodies health, my work is based on facts and statistics.

Niiice mate, looking a bit more full than my humidor, I've only got 5 left in mine, seems like such a waste of space. What's your favourite?

Honestly, I haven't had enough to have a "favourite", but the ones I have I find pretty good. Apparently they are good for beginners - they're these ones here. This thread made me want one (has been at least a month since the last one) so shared one with my mate to celebrate our first tyres session 8) :pfft:

Fine Cuban cigars on the other hand, are a luxury. And anyone who doesn't like them can take it up with Arnie

:salute:

YUK cigars STINK 10000000000 times worse than cigarettes!! I worked in bars for years in the UK and there were always old men smoking cigars at the bar, they were superglued to the place stinking and blowing smoke in your face ewwwww!

True, but I think some cigars (i.e the cubans I currently have) actually have a fairly pleasant smell. It's not something that makes you go "mmmm" if you got a whiff, but it wouldn't turn you away either. Cheap cigars, on the other hand, do tend to smell pretty nasty.

I find this very hard to believe, it's not just the health care the smokers need when they are claiming insurance ie: very sick, but there is also the everyday effect on the economy. ALL smokers I work with and have ever worked with take little breaks throughout the day therefore ending up with longer lunches etc as it is there right to smoke, this is not very productive.

I know alot of smokers that are having to have their teeth pulled out, having to have time off work for that PLUS the extra time off work they have for being sick throughout the year from having poor lung capacity and getting flu and colds worse than non smokers. In the UK the National Health System was going to put in place a points system and if you smoked you were at the bottom the list NO MATTER WHAT was wrong with you, smoking related or not I think this is a great idea. You wanna go kill yourself? Fine I'm not waiting behind you in the queue to get fixed! I'm first!

Haven't tried those ones, but if you're after a good cigar for the beginner, I would recomend Montecristo No4, reasonably mild, but still fairly full flavoured. It's one of the most popular Cubans on the market, and not too pricey. I actually used to import them, hmmm might have to look at getting back into that :D For a cheaper, more "everyday" cigar go for Jose L Piedra petit cetros, you can get them in packs of 5, and I think from memory they work out to be about $5 per cigar. They're definitely at the lower end of the Cuban range, but still very enjoyable.

And when you're ready to step up, you definitely want to try a Bolivar Belicosos Finos. About $30 of Cuban fineness, very full-bodied robusto, takes a good 45 minutes to get through. =P~

Yes V, a room full of cheap cigar smoke is very obnoxious, and will fade to the same stale nicotine smell as a room full of cigarette smoke. But there is a difference with fine cigars. They can be enjoyed and savoured in the same way some people enjoy wines, whiskey, brandy or even food. And the big difference between cigars and cigarettes, is that you don't inhale cigar smoke.

EXACTLY. how is it enjoyable if you don't inhale? bum-puffing a cigar would just leave you smelling with a bad taste in your mouth. i smoke to relax, if you don't inhale i can't see what it does for you other than make you look pimpin.

I think you'll find it is correct. There has been full studies on this. Cigaretes are worth a couple of bucks a pack yet the tax makes them close to $15, that's a hell of a lot of tax! Where's this money gonna come from if you stop the smokers? You'll be waiting on a lot longer lists for your operations.

I wasn't suggesting stopping the government from selling cigarettes.

I am suggesting there is alot of un-forseen draining on the health care system from people smoking.

:-s Err, because you taste it on your tongue, not in your lungs? Kinda the point of having a nice cigar? I'd ask the same thing for cigarettes - how is it enjoyable if you take it into your lungs?

Ah awesome, some names to note down  From where/how do you import yours? PM me if you like, starting to take this conversation off on a tangent :pfft:

I believe that. My father smoked from 12 til his early 60s, 2 packs a day, and died of a (probably?) unrelated disease (prostate cancer). My uncle has worked on diesel engines his whole life, smoked his whole life, and he has emphysema.

Table sugar (sucrose) has no micronutrients in it and it just makes you hungrier. Should we ban sugar?

Good point.

If the government want to raise the tax on smokes 'coz its awful for health, why don't they raise tax on junk food as well? Going by what another poster said an ultimate quarter pack at KFC would cost $40-50 if taxed at the same rate as smokes.

Then there was my 1st wife who would spend the last $10 we had on filth sticks rather than on milk and bread for our kids

Also something to be considered.

Smokes do absolutely nothing beneficial, but they're an awesome source of revenue for the government.

On the Topics of Smokes. One of my mate is a doctor and he once told us that "if you smoke 1 packet a day for 20 years you have 20% chance of getting a lung cancer".

Dont quote on me this, he told us this when we having a few drinks and smoking. :pfft: :pfft:

I thought it was pretty good fact if it is true. :pfft: :pfft:

Also not encouraging anyone either.

I smoke who wants a fight? lol I smoke 3 cigs during the day, hardly taking up anyones time. Do I like it? Nope its gross. Gave up last year (some may recall) after reading the easy way to give up smoking, worked for a few months.

Aparently studies show that smoking can cause you to carry more fat around your abdomen... wondered where my fucken abs went eh!?!? Also it is aparently harder to give up tobacco than it is P.

On the topic of banning it, I voted yes on a recent poll.(yahoo!xtra), however in saying that my Auntie is in the US at the moment and she says they did that and now she see's people puffing away on the freeways with kids in their cars!!! Not cool. I intend stop this year and not smoke again... but its totally my choice... you have to want to stop

3 smokes would probably do less damage to your body than living in a smoggy city.

Been good. Training has been average

A numpty at work thought it would be awesome to go on FB when the Big Boss was down from up north, so we all got banned from being online, and my partner hogs the home computer, hence my absence.
