Hearing for bodybuilder over BZP use

16.11.05 2.40pm

A New Zealand bodybuilder will front up at a Sports Disputes Tribunal hearing next week after testing positive for Benzylpiperazine, commonly referred to as BZP.

The anti-doping violation was discovered during an in-competition testing by the New Zealand Sports Drug Agency at an event earlier this year.

It was revealed in July that the bodybuilder had become the first New Zealand athlete to test positive to BZP which is the active ingredient in "herbal highs", sold legally under names such as "Blast", "Frenzy" and "Rapture".

Athletes are prohibited from using BZP, which mimics the effects of illegal drugs amphetamine and ecstasy, because it has performance-enhancing potential.

The hearing will be held in Auckland on November 23.

BZP works really well as an appetite suppressant, hence why a certain supplement company was putting it in a thermo. It will also ramp up the old metabolism, and give the kick associated with party pills in general, making it quite handy coming up to aq comp. Also, BZP wasn't a banned stimulant until it was made a class d drug in June (I think that was the date), so this comment:

Athletes are prohibited from using BZP, which mimics the effects of illegal drugs amphetamine and ecstasy, because it has performance-enhancing potential.

Is really not entirely kosher. The fact it has been classified outs it in the same category as other illegal amphetamines.

Here you go, Varven...

http://www.nzsda.co.nz/pdfs/wada_banned_list_05.pdf

It won't let me copy-and-paste, but on page 7 it says caffeine is not considered a prohibited substance (I think that's only a recent change, but I'm not sure exactly when it happened)

Please note that apparently strychnine is considered a banned substance, so I don't want to see any tested athletes taking it, mmm'k? :pfft:

Oh, and befor I get pulled up, BZP is a piperazine, not an amphetamine. I'd also like to add it makes you feel shitty the next day, and can cause you to drink waaaaaaaaay too much, thereby making you feel even shittier the next day.

Totally agree it's nasty stuff the next day! Really nasty!

If I was a bodybuilder I would be realy pissed of If I lost my tittle to a failed drug test containing BZP, how silly is that - a known appatite surpressant gets you a 2 year suspension and possibly public humiliation yet the judging calls for you to be totaly ripped by surpressing your appitite and starving your self half to death to look good, thats not to mention the guys and gals whom got busted for caffine a times back !!! thats just wrong in the sport of bodybuilding !!!
