Protein Shakes vs Chocolate Milk... A Comparison of Costs

Recommended Posts

Of course, not everyone will want to have the 3:1 carb to protein ratio after every workout etc, but as an endurance athlete and part time weight lifter, I generally do.

I used to buy protein shakes but not anymore, why should I when choclate milk is way cheaper and tastes/does the same thing.

Chocolate Milk

- with 300ml skim milk and 60g milo

- 300ml skim milk = $0.49

- 60g milo = $0.70

- total = $1.19

- carbs = about 35g

- protein = about 15g

Typical Protein Shake

- with 250-300ml water

- ranges from $1.80 per serve to $4.00 per serve (from punch supplements.co.nz)

- protein ranges from 15-30g

- carbs from 20-60g

- cheaper ones have less protein and carbs

That's why I drink chocolate milk after workouts, if I want less carbs, I just drink milk and no milo, more carbs = more milo.
