Hi everyone in NZ

My name is Sonja and I was born in New Plymouth. I now live and work in burlington, North Carolina USA. A BEd and teaching got me here and now I have gone back to my passion of being active and fit again. I am a personal trainer with a gym owner Larry Gurney from Tennessee, He operates over the eastern side of US and I PT at The Rush Fitness Complex we operate 24/7 I have just completed my first anniversary. I train at 5am on a 5/1 program and currently very lean at 10% BF weigh 58kg and still cutting up. I have several work out partners whom are also bodybuilders or have been actively involved in the sport for several years who still maintain their pro-cards. I am not actively competing but thinking about it I am really quite shy when it comes to the stage. Because I am Maori they love my natural tan and in the summer when it gets to around 30+c and I tan up even more the definition certainly shows. My clients that I train are mainly weight loss and wanting to become more aware of their health. It is not an easy task to change a persons eating habits and also get them to exercise 3-4 times a week, psychology is so important, it is not as natural to them as it is for us in NZ, as our environment plays an important part. Hope you enjoy reading this and as we say KEEP IT PUMPED,

Hello and welcome!

Your mission with the Americans sounds like my mission with my husband, trying to get him into a more active lifestyle. Major fail so far - he's English and though he was active as a kid, there just doesn't seem to be the same mindset over there that activity should also carry on into adulthood (that was certainly my experience living over there in my 20s too - very unhealthy, and a very standard mindset among all the people I knew over there - a balanced diet = beer AND chips!).

Welcome Sonja

Good to see more kiwis making an impact around the world, we don't do too bad for a flightless bird!

this flightless bird has not been back to NZ since 2005. My co-PTs are always taking the micky out of me and trying to teach me their southern ways, and i still don't know anything about american football and the superbowl in two weeks. Still got alot to learn about this culture.

cheers Sonja

Hey Sonja. Good to have you here. 10% BF is pretty impressive for a guy, but even moreso for a chick! And you're not even competing?

I'm really experimenting with my BF right now just to see how low I can go

from what my workout partners say they are amazed too and yet I don't feel any major set backs health wise, I eat every 2 hrs, I train 2hrs p/day which includes a 30-45min cardio. straight after my resistance wkouts, except for when I do legs I go back to the gym in the evening, I change my routines every 2wks maybe thats the secret. It has taken forever to gain some weight, I have a cheat day on Saturdays, chocolate being my vice.

Just love being healthy.

Cheers Sonja

Hi - wellcome .... impressive stats. Great to have another PT on the forum also. :D Have you always had such low bodyfat or is it something that you have had to work on?

Hi, what is the name of the gym where you PT at? I have always been able to lose weight and BF at any given time providing I work at it but my metabolism when it kicks in it never stops, the more consistent I am with my programme the more I burn. I eat every 2hrs, I drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day, cut back on my carbs, and with my menu, use only what I need to, pertaining to my body weight. i.e fats, protein and carbs. I pre and post workout whey protein, and if I feel or get real muscle fatigue add L-glutamine to the mix for a couple of days, and or creatine if really bad.

Will see what happens in the next up and coming months. I started out at 17% Aug 2009 I wasn't even trying. I started as a PT in Jan 09 and I was 22% then when I first took my BF, and my body weight at that time was 60kg, one of my training partners said I must have good genes. Is that even possible???? have a good week cheers Sonja

Hi Sonja, its good to see another Kiwi - American resident on the boards. Like you I have been here since 2005 and I still can't get into american football or the culture. I drive past Burlington quite often on my way between Atlanta and Raleigh. Sometimes stopping at the eastbound rest area just before exit 140 to sweep out my trailer, and using the petro truckstop in Mebane (exit 157) as a sleep stop.

Is this your regular 'run' how many times a week? when do you get to train?

It is stange but I miss talking to someone who can actually speak english,

We don't have a Rush fitness Complex in Atlanta. I have met one other NZder in Burlington they have on their front number plate Hobbit, I have kiwi on my front plate. if you ever want to catch up, truck stop or rest area I know where both places are just let me know. cheers Sonja

My dispatcher likes to keep me guessing on where he is sending me next, some weeks i am up that way 3 times then other weeks I spend my time bouncing between Atlanta and Memphis. Most weekends I train once or twice depending on what hours I am home, the rest of the time if I stop close enough to a YMCA I will go there, or just do bodyweight workouts next to the truck and swing my kettlebell around. I keep a little stuffed kiwi on my dash as my co-pilot and a NZ flag number plate on my dash in the truck. Catching up sometime would be good, will let you know when I am heading back up that way.
