Heart Palpitations

BFLchick

Recommended Posts

I have read that low magnesium levels can cause heart palpitations. I'll try to find the info. Generally speaking, most people wouldn't meet their daily magnesium requirements, especially women. It's very hard to get the RDA from food alone, especially when restricting food (i.e. dieting). Magnesium levels can also become low due to a variety of reasons.

Welcome BFLchick :)

hahaah grover, nice one, thanks guys

I have heard about low magnesium being an issue, I did used to take a magnesium supplement, reckon I should get back onto that!

I did my first BFL complete Vegetarian but have since picked up chicken and fish, that may also help with getting more magnesium

Quite a freaky thing in the middle of the night or middle of cardio feeling like your heart will come out your throat!

Nuts and grains are better sources of magnesium, meat of any kind isn't a great source. Pumpkin seeds are the best source I know of. 28g of raw pumpkin seeds has 150mg of magnesium (151 cals). It's preferable to eat them raw. Cooking the seeds oxidises the magnesium making it less bio-available (turning it into magnesium oxide). Pumpkin seeds also have a reasonable balance of good monounsaturated fats vs omega-6. Same with raw:

28g almonds = 75mg of magnesium (161 cals)

28g sunflower seeds = 91mg of magnesium (164 cals)

If you choose to supplement, I recommend magnesium citrate which is also reputably more bio-available than magnesium oxide. Also, the more magnesium you take at once, the less the body absorbs, so it's best to supplement smaller amounts more frequently.

Hmm, never thought I'd see those words come out of Rose's keyboard, for any reason. :pfft:

What have you done with Rose???

Heh! I'm willing to make allowances for other foods that are good sources of minerals essential to life! Without sufficient magnesium in your diet, while you may not notice it off the bat, pretty soon something's gonna suck/break.

Examples (approx):

20mg magnesium per 100g beef

30mg magnesium per 100g chicken

RDA is around 310-320mg for women, 400-420 for men. Stress, exercise, crap diet increase requirements. Lots of things interfere with absorption and contribute to a deficiency, blah blah blah. Are you asleep yet?

Le Meat is le understanding, cos without enough magnesium there probably wouldn't be any meat? 8)

Heh, point taken Ma'am, I understood your meaning perfetly well, but couldn't resist the opportunity. Apparently I have problems with impulse-control

I though it was funny! I'll have to watch what I say about meat in future or someone might insist I post a vid to prove it :pfft:

Anyone else get random heart palpitations?Im not taking any caffeine based supplements and I dont drink coffee, just sometimes randomly during a cardio session or even just sitting at home BAM heart palpitation ;)

Bit creepy... 8)

A few years back I went through a period where i was having these palpitations, basically what happens is that your heart misses a bit and then supercompensates with one big strong one! I had it all checked out (ECG etc...) and was told i was fine and that it sometimes happens with no explanation and nothing to be alarmed about.

But hey, its your heart and you do realy need it, so its best to be on the safe side and get it checked out just in case.
