Hey my friend is 89kg and did a max rep of 180KG. I don't know much about what others can do. What you guys think of the bench? He wasn't wearing a bench jacket thing as well

Here we go again. Lots of talk about benching twice your bodyweight for ten clean reps but no actual proof. :---)

I say give the dude the benefit of the doubt. Sounds strong. A video would allow us to critique his technique.

In terms of records etc, bench shirts have made raw benching pretty much irrelevant in powerlifting. Also, powerlifting rules are strict. A pause on the chest is required, feet flat, bum on bench, head on bench etc.

Great benching for a novice lifter! There's a Auckland Novice Comp in March sometime (maybe the 7th of March?).

NZ Bench Press Only Records:

Under 19 years - 90kg class - Shane Lowe - 147.5kg

Under 24 years - 90kg class - S Parsons - 175kg

Open Mens - 90kg class - N Frank - 215kg

NZ 3-Lift Bench Press Records

Under 19 - 90kg class - S Lowe - 147.5kg

Under 24 years - 90kg class - D Pomana - 186.0kg

Open Mens - 90kg class - N Frank - 222.5kg

Your mate would probably compete in the 90kg class. If he wants to compete then thats awesome, if he wants to break a NZ record even better.

With a 180kg bench @ 89kg BW, there's definitely NZ records that he could get. But he needs to understand that benching at a competition is a massive step up from benching at a gym, ie. pause, no lifting the butt, feet must be flat etc.

If your mate is serious about competing, get him to train with some powerlifters. If he just wants to have big lifts in the gym, then there's nothing wrong with that.

Too right. I'm certain I had a 3 second pause on one of my bench attempts at the Powerhouse meet. It felt like it anyway!
