Why do you train?

Being vain.

Hoping that at the age of 45 I look better than I do now.

(Don't ask me why I chose that number "45" it's in my head while I'm writing this)!

I can fit into my jeans - muffin tops - eww - yukky stuff! (And no - I haven't got a muffin top - just incase anybody asks)!

I can keep up with taking my best friends 4 year old son to the park - without coughing up a lung - or collapsing.

Oh and did I mention vanity? :pfft:

I won't be 58 for a few years but appears as over 40 fall into that "older" bracket

spent formative years playing sport and going gym, then had a few years off.

Now back into it seriously and wondering why the hell i stopped!

lot of catch up to do now.

as for when i'm 60 sure as hell hope so.

for all the above mentioned reasons

health

fitness

vanity

Sanity

Given some sound advice a while ago by a well respected sports doctor.

The more muscle you carry into old age the healthier you'll be and the longer you'll live.

Young ones need to stop slagging off older people. They put in just as much time, effort and money into keeping in shape as anyone else. If they put in the time and effort then they belong in the gym or on stage just as much as anyone else.

Age has got nothing to do with it - it's all in the mind, and the attitude.

Yep, that's so true. I've mentioned it a few times before, but generally in pump classes that I go to it's the older women who are lifting the heaviest weights and lifting them well. I've noticed a few others who are younger lifting big weights, but squatting like one inch or bench pressing about the same, so I don't count them as lifting big weights.

Definitely shouldn't be dissed, that's for sure.

Im interested to know what it is that keeps different people going to the gym.

I seen a old guy in the gym the other day tryna push himself on the lat pulldowns

It made me think to myself..

"I hope im still not doing this shit when im his age"

So my next Q..

Could you ever stop going to the gym or will you just get old and still train?

i train as a way to get away from work and stress and have something to inspire to, without going to deep on the subject

When I meet Americans over here I don't want their first impression of a Kiwi as being a chubster driving a truck.

Sex is better and lasts longer when fit.

I want to continue pushing weights into my 70's or 80's. I have watched my father and his brothers who were all big powerful men develop diabetes and cholesterol problems and have their muscles eaten away by cholesterol medications

Fear of Fatness is a motivator for me I guess, and probably on equal terms is performance for sport.

But above both of those reasons - I train because I love it. I'm an introvert, and weight lifting is something that when it comes down to it, is you, and only you, moving big amounts of metal. Disregarding training partners, it's a solo pursuit, and something that appeals to my type of personality.

I'm addicted to it, and it's my high. Pure and simple

Y she want revenge on me? lulz

Nah, but fear of fatness is a big thing for me too but more than that I just like being in good shape.

Always find people who can't understand the value of being fit and/or cut weird but each to their own eh?

Why do I train?

1. Get fit / lose weight

2. Get strong

3. Look good

4. Get healthy

5. To prove that I can stick to it - similar to nemesis, I have people still waiting for me to throw the towel!

6. I've finally broken through to the point where I look forward to going to the gym and pushing myself!

7. Looking at the hotties at the gym helps too.

That's a really good point, and true for me to. I'm also an introvert and as well as that very independently minded and though I played team sports as a kid, my preference has always been for more solo activities, like swimming, cycling, and gymnastics (when I was really young!). I like training the way I do because it's my 'me' time which is very important to me.
