Im interested to know what it is that keeps different people going to the gym.

I seen a old guy in the gym the other day tryna push himself on the lat pulldowns

It made me think to myself..

"I hope im still not doing this shit when im his age"

So my next Q..

Could you ever stop going to the gym or will you just get old and still train?

Gosh that's a weird way of thinking if you ask me. Who wants to be old and weak? IMO it's more important to stick at it when you're older. At the very least weight training when older helps with everyday shit like carrying shopping, staying mobile and being able to get up out of your chair. Not to mention the numerous other benefits. I'm with Old Bull! Lifting for life!

Rose, is that you? :)

I started doing weights when I was 16 to get strong for League. It didn't take long to realise that I loved lifting weights more than anything in the world. I was hooked.

I organise my life around my training. I will never stop lifting weights. :)

Its interesting to hear what other people have to say!

For sure. Question, cos I'm interested in the flip side. Is lifting not something you see yourself doing on a life-term basis? And if not, why not? Or was that a passing thought that you quickly banished? (Re hope you're not still doing it when older)

Rose, is that you? :)

Nope, it's an imposter. Quick, lets kill it, it looks dangerous :flames:

I dont want to stop lifting and ill most probably feel the same way in years to come.

In a way I kinda pictured myself in that guys shoes. Its kinda strange.

Ill just live for the moment and see what happens! :)

I do it because it's fun, makes me feel good, and because I know I have a better body now than I did before I started, and I'm vain so having a better body is a good thing

As for still doing it when I'm 60 - who knows? I'm 41 now, and only started thinking about fitness when I was 29 - prior to that I was all about smoking, drinking, and eating incredibly badly. Skinny fat in the extreme. So since I've only been into fitness for a relatively short time, and taking weights seriously for only one year, I really couldn't say in all honesty.

I only took up weights in the first place because when I moved back to Wellington in 2001 I was scared of the roads and didn't want to cycle and lived miles from a pool so swimming wasn't convenient - the 2 things I used to do daily when I lived in Chch. So who knows what the future will bring - I might move onto something else, though I'm sure there will be a fitness element, as I'd say that's definitely part of my lifestyle for good now. But life changes, and situations change, and I'm open to trying different things if I get bored with weights or if my circumstances change and if weights are no longer right for me for whatever reason.
