Standard vs Olympic

Just a quick question re barbells. How much can a standard barbell hold? I read somewhere that it has a max capacity of 250lbs. I've been looking to buy a 7ft standard bar (all my plates are standard) but wondered how high weights it can handle. Dont want to have to buy another bar a couple years down the track.

The weights I lift are very light, but on deadlift I could probably do almost 100kg for 1rep, which is close to the supposed 250lb limit.

So whats the real deal with standard and olympic bars?

Cheers folks.

In general a standard barbell can handle about 100kg before it starts to bend.

If you plan to carry on lifting, I suggest getting an olympic barbell. You can still use the standard bar and weights for other supplemental lifts, it saves you having to change the weight on the olympic barbell.

"Don’t waste your money on cheap 6ft barbells weighing 22lbs/10kg and without revolving sleeves or middle knurling. Get a quality barbell from the start."

Shit, I did buy a 6' standard bar last year. It was what I could afford at the time, and I wasn't clued in on the subject of quality. Oh well, I'll have to get a new one and new weights on student loan, and hawk off my old gear to my mates.

Where're you from mate? I have some gear in Auckland for sale.
