TV program dissing vitamins

Hey guys,

Just wondering who saw that program (couple of months back- think it may be called something like "are vitamins killing you"), with the doc saying people don't need to take vitamins etc. It had a lot of participants who took vitamins and got them to stop taking them for a number of weeks. Then they had their vitamin levels measured.

Just want to know your thoughts on it. I've heard that the RDA is way too low and was developed during WW2 so soldiers didn't get scurvy etc. Also heard from a nutritionist that it be good to have up 1000mg of Vit C a day.

Thing to remember with vitamins and minerals, more is not necessarily better. Some of them, including vitamin C, are utilised less when taken in large amounts. The body only takes what it needs and excretes the rest.

This isn't a problem so much with water soluble vitamins like the b complex, but it is *possible* for fat soluble vitamins like A and D to build up to mildly toxic levels. You don't need to take fat soluble vitamins every day - they are stored in the liver and fat tissue as opposed to water soluble vitamins which the body requires more frequently, i.e. every day.

Often you're better off taking smaller doses more frequently. This applies for many of the vitamins and minerals, e.g. magnesium - when taken in large doses, the absorption rate tends to diminish.

Another point is that taking large amounts as a safeguard against possible deficiencies *can* end up doing the complete opposite, i.e. causing toxicity or a deficiency in a competing vitamin/mineral.

Example. Perhaps you eat lots of food high in zinc (e.g. chicken), and take a supplement that contains the RDA for zinc. Yes, the body only utilises what it needs, and in zinc's case shits it out, but continual supplementation *can* lead to a mineral imbalance, and what you think is a deficiency because the symptoms are the same, is actually toxicity. E.g. zinc deficiency results in delayed wound healing, but then so does zinc toxicity. Prolonged supplementation of zinc *can* lead to a deficiency in copper and iron.

I personally think it pays to be aware of which basic vitamins and minerals are essential to everyday existence and make sure you're getting adequate amounts of those. It's not that hard to work it into your nutrition. In the case of magnesium, 28g of raw pumpkin seeds contains 150mg of magnesium in its most bio-available form (i.e. not oxidised). Mineral powerhouse 8)

Sometimes taking a multi is a waste of time. Some el cheapo's contain minerals in forms that will block absorption of others that are equally important.

Next time you're feeling tired and don't know why? Maybe it's not because you're deficient in something and need to pop a multi, but rather take a break from popping it.

Back on topic, I'm sure they all need some zinc. Especially round the cleavage. Keeps the skin nice and firm. With boobs that huge you'd want to make sure you didn't get stretch marks from frollicking topless :nod:

How to fake a vitamin study

Faking a vitamin study to show supplements as harmful is extremely easy to pull off, by the way. All you have to do is use synthetic forms of the vitamins and avoid using natural, food-sourced vitamins. These synthetic vitamins – which are really just industrial chemicals – may be called "Vitamin E" or "Vitamin A" or even "Vitamin C" but they have no functional resemblance to the real vitamins that occur in nature. Every single study over the past two decades that has sought to discredit Vitamin E, for example, focused on using synthetic Vitamin E in order to show harm. It is curious that no researcher from the world of conventional medicine will ever test the natural, full-spectrum vitamins, nutrients and phytochemicals that appear in nature. You know why? Because they would discover a universe of natural medicine that makes patented prescription drugs obsolete.

A second way to fake a vitamin meta-data study is to simply cherry-pick the results you want to include in your meta-data analysis. This is a routine trick used by dishonest researchers who have an agenda of discrediting nutritional supplements. To pull this one off, they simply eliminate all previous studies that showed positive results for vitamins, and include only previous studies that showed negative results. Then they run a statistical analysis on all the studies they hand-picked and declare – surprise! – those vitamins are dangerous! Many of the studies on vitamin E, by the way, were conducted on dying heart patients who were only expected to live two weeks, regardless of what they took. :lol:

And what about the studies done on rats or mice? How're they really relevant?

Although, most supplements do contain synthetic (cheap!) versions of the vitamins you note. How many people will take the time to find out which is the natural form of vitamin E before buying something thinking it's OK, it's a supplement containing essential vitamins and minerals, must be good for me...

The different forms of vitamin e are very similarly named.

It's really no different to other parts of the fitness industry, publishing studies that compare apples to oranges and concluding that fruit makes you fat.
