Wellington Weather

It's never great weather around xmas/new year in welly, but this 'summer' has been particularly bad, so it's not all that normal. I've found it way colder this year than before, same with the winter just gone. Normally I don't wear jeans from about November til around April/May because I get too sweaty with such heavy clothes on, but I'm wearing jeans and socks and chucks today, which is pretty much unheard of for this time of the year for me normally. Oh, and a long sleeved cardy - I'm bloody freezing!

We're off to the movies so that we don't have to see how horrible the weather is today!

I think you can blame it on El Nino. The Southern Oscillation index has moved moderately positive causing strong westerlies over New Zealand. This pattern is expected to persist till March.

This same weather pattern causes floods in South America.

Niwa Says:

Don't get out your togs and jandals just yet - summer is shaping up to be colder than average, Niwa's latest seasonal forecast shows.

Niwa climate scientist Brett Mullan said temperatures in all regions were expected to be below average from December through February as an El Nino system in the Pacific made its presence felt. The weather over summer would be consistent with El Nino conditions, Dr Mullan said.

"In the last two months the system in the tropics got a bit stronger, so it's now starting to affect us.

"We expect it to just continue right through summer."

So much for summer

Jump on a plane and fly up to the islands, weather is great despite what weather maps say, yes it rains, but only in short spurts then sun is out again!

Awesome weather, only feel cold at 3am when need to pull sheet over oneself again!

When I was younger (smaller, lighter!), standing at the top of the hill on Chapman Street in Jville you could lean into a strong northerly and the wind would hold you up. That was back when wind was really wind and there was a discernible difference between winter and summer. It hailed a lot more too.

Yep, that's very normal for wellytown. Lived there 5 years in Newlands. Way up the top on the hill where the jumbos fly over. Use to shit myself at night thinking the roof was gonna come off. Then on the news in the morning roofs did come off just down the road from our house! Glad to be outa that place.

Just got back to Wellington from Whitianga - was absolutely gorgeous weather up there, very still during the day (tad windy at night, but) and the temperatures stayed around the mid 20s for the few days I was there. I'm very brown now \:D/

Could tell on the trip back though how far we were from Wellington as the sky began to darken :pfft:

I don't mind though, me and the rest of the group I was with were actually beginning to get sick of the sun - we were camping so the tents were like saunas, and the constant thirstiness(+always having warm water)/hunt for shade was annoying. Beaches were freckin beautiful though (Cathedral Cove, I'm looking at you).

The way I look at it is, at least if it's windy/cold you can hole up inside with a blanket and keep warm 8) It's good to get away every so often for some heat and sunshine, but from what I just experienced trying to keep cool can be a bit of work at times. And anyway, I reckon when Wellington is beautiful, it's beautiful :) (admittedly it can be a rare occurrence :pfft:)

But hey, I thought the two years I lived in Auckland the weather up there wasn't a heck of a lot better than Wellington, maybe it just depends on what you're used to when you're deciding what is crap or not :)

Dude I LOVE flying into Wellington, it's more exciting than any roller-coaster ride :pfft: I've had landings that make you feel like you're in that opening scene from Top Gun, where the Tomcat's all over the show as it's trying to land :lol:

I flew into wellytown one day, mean as wind, roller coast type weather. The pilot was a chick, I then thought, we are doomed.

But it turned out she handled that thing and landed us the best I have ever experienced in such bad weather.

Go chick pilots!!! \:D/

Wellington's got a fab safety record - number of landings always equals number of take-offs :)

I flew into Wellington in '86, actually during the storm that sank the Police launch with the loss of all souls aboard. I can remember the plane crabbing on final approach to the runway, looking out the side windows at the runway centreline ahead, and marvelling as the pilot booted the rudder to straighten up at the last minute.

Besides, the wind clears out the air pollution, helps with the floating rubbish in the harbour - 's all good.
