chest pain...

Recommended Posts

i am getting the strangest damn pain in my chest when doing non-chest exes, and the pain is not in my actual chest muscles themselves but dead centre, middle of chest. can bench/fly etc with zero discomfort, but some exes are giving me a really strong ache in the ^ described area. low rep seated bbell curls, dips, standing bbell press. and mostly, the ache doesnt happen during the sets, but straight after. its fucken weird. and its getting worse.

Yes, i am going to go to the physio. But can anyone relate to this, or knows the cause/fix?? its been getting steadily worse, getting to the point were i cant ignore it no more...

u Probably just pulled a muscle, i remember having the feeling of someone with their hands completely around my chest and squeezing the fuk out of it as hard as they could. lasted for 3 days, was shitting myself. Ended up being a pulled muscle and the body naturally tightened to protect the area.

It could be a problem in one of the joints between the sternum and the ribs. I get arthritis pain often in one of these joints. I can benchpress 140 kg ok but just standing and breathing causes sharp pain.

or it could be:

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone or sternum. It is in fact an inflammation of the connective tissue between the breastbone and the ribs. What exactly is cartilage? Cartilage is a tough rubbery tissue that lines and cushions the surfaces of joints. Although most of the people think that every pain in the chest is linked to the myocardial ischemia or infarction, this condition also causes localized chest pain that you can reproduce by pushing on the cartilage in the front of your ribcage.

The pain may be more noticeable in sitting or reclining positions, and stress is known to aggravate it. The fact is that costochondritis is a relatively harmless condition and usually goes away without treatment. It is never accompanied with swelling. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. It is a very similar condition to a disease called Tietze's syndrome, with only one difference - Tietze's includes swelling. The discomfort of costochondritis often lasts a few days only.

Try using NSAIDS such as Diclofenac Sodium(Voltaren) to reduce the pain if it is in the joint

I was kinda thinking along the same lines as what Agent86 was saying - a long time ago I had intercostitis (similar, but inflammation of the intercostal ligaments), it sounded similar to what you're describing, but in a different location.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Voltaren are the go to relieve the symptoms, if that's what it is.

But... some of these inflammatory conditions can be confused with heart attacks - which we hope you've ruled out long ago :)

interesting, seems this is a little more common than i thought!

i will def steer clear of those steroidal ones mate

and i sure hope im not a H.A candidate :shifty:

If you are getting middle chest pain when exercising & its goes away when you rest, I would suggest you get yourself to your Doc & get it checked out. It might just be as described by some ^^ but it could also be a host of other more serious conditions.

na man, its still there during the day, just more pronounced after sets. will try the volta, and if that doesnt work ill hit up the physio.
