Powerlifters banned for stimulant use

AAP - December 24, 2009, 4:36 pm

Powerlifters Scott Hill and Odell Manuel have been banned for three months for the use of a banned substance.

Powerlifting Australia has imposed the bans on the national-level competitors, a decision welcomed on Thursday by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA).

Hill and Manuel tested positive to the stimulant methylhexanamine at the Australian Powerlifting Championships in July.

They will not serve the mandatory two-year sentence for first offences because ASADA was satisfied they used the substance as part of a supplement and not to boost their performance in the sport.

"Mr Hill and Mr Manuel provided evidence to ASADA that established that the presence of methylhexanamine was due to the use of supplements," an ASADA statement said.

"Powerlifting Australia and ASADA were satisfied that their use of methylhexanamine was not intended to enhance their sporting performance and, as such, a sanction of between a warning and two-years ineligibility was applicable for first offences."

The pair will be able to return to competition in March.

They have been disqualified from the events they competed in at the national championships.

Geranium oil extract, if anybody's wondering.

Hardly a performance-enhancer, either.

It looks like Methylhexanamine was the culprit. It's listed as Geranamine on the Bang label. Geranamine is apparently a trademark.

doing a google search on Methylhexanamine and WADA reveals a whole bunch of positives including 5 Jamacian sprinters, and a French cyclist.

Was wondering when the final verdict would come out, the positive test results were well over 6 months ago. A shame that shoddy labelling has cost athletes a suspension. Anyone that noticed Odell is an ex-Warrior & a phenom lifter posting some crazy numbers in his first year. Look forward to more soon.

It was an honest mistake and isnt the first time time Ive seen this happen in the powerlifting scene where lifters have taken a supplement thinking it was ok only to return a positive test. Its a gut wrenching way to learn a lesson but its one that all tested athletes must be aware of and thats know what you are taking and whats in your supplements.

Here in NZ if I have any doubt about any medical prescription or supplement Im going to take I will get hold of NZ drugfree by either texting them (4365) or calling them. Its a high price to pay if you get it wrong.

Like Nate said, Odell is one freak lifter and the powerlifting world will soon know who this strength freak is - this guy was born to lift huge amounts of iron.
