Whey = runs

Hey Sharky, I think I know the answer to this but obviously check with some of the more experianced memebrs.

I had a similar problem when I started out on the protein shakes, infact I had a much more embarrasing event but that's another story

Anyway, I think it's down to obsorbtion rates and until your really using more protein through intensive workouts and your body is used to obsorbing the increased amount of protein over your normal dietry levels you will have "the runs" also you may just simply be consuming too much for anyone to obsorb? It's easy I'm sure to get into the thinking that "well if 25gms per serving is good then 50 is better right? so how much better must 100grm per serving be?"

Do some research on protein consumption levels (usually thought to be around 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight, example - 200lb person needs approx 200grams of protein over the course of the day. Not in one serving of course).

Just ease back a little on your amounts for a few weeks until your really pumping and your body will be gagging for the increased levels.

Hope this helps ya.

If I am way out and off the mark I'm sorry and I'm sure opti or one of the other mods here can steer you right.

Good luck reaching your goals either way

Bro, like they said, give your body time to get use to the protein, could be you wernt having much protein, and now all of a sudden your body is trying to deal with all this extra...

I found same problem when i first started, so i just took less and added a bit more every 1-2 weeks.

It could just be the brand maybe switch next time?

Also this might help have 300-400 ml of water with 2-3 scoops of whey, after your workout and when you get home have 1/2 litre of milk when you get home.

Now you know you're going to have to spill the beans aye Mister?

Nope, not beans exactly, I suspect

mmmm! beans!

I'll tell ya BUT promise ya won't tell anyone else!

It wasn't as bad a situation as it could have been, just a simple case of ignoring the same warnings that I got on this subject of undigested protein excesses. I was warned to beware the runs, they obviously had a differnt idea of what runs are compared to what I think.

As you would already have guessed I was caught short. But it was the speed with which I went from defcon4 to defcon1 that was the real shitter.

One minute I'm gas bagging about this and that with one of my guys by airport oaks. The next I have to make my excuses and cut the convo short as I felt "a bit iffy". I had felt the beginnings of that stomach churning (you know that famous churning, we've all felt it at one time or another :shifty: DefCon4, on alert) I then realised half way home, which was only 3 minutes max from where I'd started, that it might as well have been 3 hours away. There was no way in hell i had the strength to keep the cargo doors shut for another minute. Emergency manuvor, pull the rip cord and bail out. Defcon 1 had arrived! Fire in the hole!

Lucky for me I had two pieces of very good fortune.

1) it was dark.

2) there was a very bushy bush next to where I had pulled over  .

I wont gross you out with details, but I'm sure you can put it together. Thankfully also for the brief time I was behind that bush there was no oncoming traffic (plenty came from my direction but I doubt they could see me). Plus because I was in the wifes truck and we have messy kids there was even a pleantifull supply of tissues

My old in car emergency supply kit now has some new additions to it ever since that fearful day.

It could have gone SOO much worse I am just thankful that it didn't. This I can laugh about. Probably not so much if I had taken the motorway route home.

Do you also drink milk, or mix it with milk?

If you have a lactose intolerance, that will be a double hit of gas and loose bowels.

If milk gives you gas, WPC will be the atomic version.

WPI may be the way forward.

My stomach betters on WPI, but my body feels better on WPC (if that makes sense?), even though I get the gas. I avoid milk like it is the plague, though, or it is all over.

WPI has a lot of the good stuff raped out of it in addition to the lactose, e.g. calcium. Isolate has also had some of the valuable immune-boosting protein subfractions such as alpha lactoglobulins and lactoferrins removed in the filtering process. It's also higher in sodium.

  • 2 weeks later...

I usually put 4 tablespoons of whey protein concentrate (from a 20kg bag) into a 2 liter bottle of milk and shake it up to mix. Doesn't give me an upset stomach or anything. Dairy consumption depends on genetics, some people thrive on it, some people should really not touch the stuff. Also, WPC is better.

The other option might be rice protein powder, a friend cannot manage whey so switched to the rice variety with no probs.

hello. So, may I know which brand of rice protein powder do you recommend? I heard that the SUN WARRIOR Vegan Rice Protein powder is really famous in the States. Do you where can I get one of those ?

thanks a lot.

Yeah, I've also noticed that some products can be more "potent" than others.

Last year I tried Inner Armour SuperQuad Protein and within a day something was running a marathon! A mate of mine who also bought a tub had problems too. I stopped taking it, problem solved.

I only bought that product because it was cheaper than other powders at the time (shotgunsupplements - awsome store!)

A few months later I thought I'd give it another go as I thought that maybe it was the previous batch I was having problems with but no go (or a lot of go...)

Am now having EatMe and no worries.
