whats wrong with egg yolks?

nothings "wrong" with them.. some people use just the egg white cause they dont want to injest the fat content. Maybe they are doing a calorie deficit diet and need to stick to a certain macro nutrient intake. If your not then eat them all i think they are great.

Half the protein is in the yolk. The theory of being only allowed 3 eggs a week has been disproved. I eat 6 eggs a day  my cholesterol is just fine and dandy

wheres the evidence of this?

Evidence of what? My Cholesterol levels? My doctor has those!

I have done alot of reading up about eggs just to make sure it's OK to eat lots of them and the NZ government recently decided that the 3 a week is crap:

This is from the National heart foundation:

Should I eat eggs?

It was thought you should eat no more than 3 eggs a week. There is now no general restriction on the number of eggs most people can eat a week - as long as you keep your saturated fat intake down and eat a healthy balanced diet. However some people may still not be able to eat quite as many as they would like to.

How you cook your eggs will make a difference - eggs are best cooked with as little as possible fat added. Poached, boiled or cooked on a non-stick fry pan are the best ways to eat an egg.

Or just do some research you'll find that eggs are OK and we needn't be afraid!

  • 3 weeks later...

I think some people are more prone to high colesterol. if it was soley diet, eliminating the 'bad' things should make a difference straight away, perhaps?

I eat whole eggs. About 4-6 a day.

have for years. so far, everything is sweet as. but I am no researcher, and only go off my own experiences.

For me personally, I eat 5 eggs per day (1whole) and it becomes a habit that I follow through with pre-comp and comp season, mainly because I am conscious of the extra calories in the yolk. Eggs have had a bad rap when it comes to healthy eating, recent studies suggest that egg cholesterol may have little effect on the blood cholesterol level when you are having an overall low-fat diet. You should limit your intake if you have high blood cholesterol levels and a family history of heart disease.

Not necessarily. It's a common misperception that cholesterol in eggs causes high cholesterol. Rather, the fats and cholesterol in eggs help your body rid itself of excess cholesterol by making fats and cholesterol able to be more fully utilised. Note that eggs contain EFA's/UFA's as well.

Protein bio-availability argument aside please, raw egg yolk is one of the best digestive aids you can eat. This is because the raw yolk contains water and with it all of its lipase. Lipase is the fat-splitting enzyme. Without lipase, you lose the ability to digest fats, and thus cholesterol.

Most of our digestive lipase is released by the pancreas. It's water-soluble and works at the interface between water and lipids. As we age, pancreatic lipase production declines.

The inability to digest fats is pretty common these days. But rather then avoid fats people would be better off looking for ways to aid their ability to digest fats.

Raw, but I personally wouldn't go eating commercially farmed eggs raw. Fresh, happy organic eggs only. Buy a pet hen! \:D/

The idea is to maximise your intake of unheated fats and oils rich in lipase, which pasteurisation and processing destroy.

You therefore won't get sufficient lipase using vegetable oils. Even oils like extra virgin olive oil don't contain lipase, except as unfiltered oil, but because lipase causes it to go off quickly you can't buy it.

Generally, anything fatty like egg yolk, eaten without mixing with other food, isn't well absorbed, e.g. if you just swallow fish oil caps, the oil may not be absorbed because lipase can't penetrate a blob of oil or fat. Always try to emulsify oils and fats by shaking or chewing with other food.

More palatable options are fresh avocado or coconut flesh. Or take lipase supplements. The problem with lipase supplements is it's a race against time before it's inactivated either by stomach acid or another enzyme. Enteric coated caps present other problems. Pre-mixing the powder from capsules with food can help overcome this. But not hot food.

If you want to detect how fresh your egg is, immerse it in water. If it lies flat on the bottom, it's fresh. The older it is, the more the blunt end rises. If it stands on its tip it's old (can still be used). If it floats up it's rotten.

Yay, finally some wisdom from Rose that I already knew :D:D

Usually when reading a Rose-post, I feel like I should be wearing a dunce's cap  (Not trying to be a smart-arse ma'am, merely acknowledging a higher power lol)

:ditto: and here's why (for me, at least)...

embedded in here is a nugget which I didn't know... having been swallowing flax-oil caps for years, now I know that at least one of the potential nutrient pathways may not have worked.

So, I for one will end this day better informed than I started. Thanks, R.
